Aye. I tend to only become active on this board on the few months leading up to and after an album release or tour. When Backspacer came out I'm sure around 80-90% of the comments I saw on here were positive, hailing it as the best thing since Yield. When I came back about 2 years later everyone hated it.
In my experience, people often hate great music at first, then grow to like it. Likewise, music that is easy to like on a first or second listen, doesn't always last as well. It's not surprising that Pearl Jam fans are excited about a new album coming out, but if after two years, they listen more to the 90's albums/songs, that's a better judge of the past album.
Nevertheless, RM isn't too bad, you should go over to the ten club forum, and you'll see the hallelujah crowd saying that the new album is the best thing since sliced bread.

That's a good point. Some of the PJ albums that took longer to click with me (No Code, Vitalogy) have gone on to be some of my favourites. It's just that the overall opinion seemed to have grossly changed in 2 years from "this is the best album of the last decade" to "whatever they put out next, it better not sound anything like Backspacer". I quite liked Backspacer. I thought the songs were good and interesting on the whole and while production wasn't anything to brag about it was a marked improvement on S/T.
And I quite like it here, the only reason I don't stay is because almost anything I've ever liked enough to become a member of a message board like this permanently, I've gone on to detest. So I find it quite refreshing to come and go as seems appropriate at the time. I still listen to PJ in some capacity almost daily but I feel like being on a board like this constantly would begin to squeeze enjoyment out of that. It's exciting to be here right now though.

Well put! I've been a member as far back as I can remember, But yeah I don't come around all the time for those same reasons. I love the people here, but My life doesnt allow me the time I would need to really be a dedicated daily contributor. But times like this I make sure I come around, it's exciting!

Being devil's advocate, some people (myself included perhaps?) feel like they relate to the people in this band somewhat and are happy to have new music from them. That is the extent of the requirement for listening enjoyment. To me, all of Pearl Jam's output has some guitar work going on, which I like, it has Eddie's voice, which I like, it has some hooks in there, which I like, and it generally touches on some topics of humanity/social conscience, which I feel gives the music that extra bit of depth and spirituality.
Frankly, that's all I need to enjoy their music. I'm not particularly inclined to rank PJ's albums or cherry pick my favourites. Different songs and different albums have been the soundtrack for different parts of my life.
Was Backspacer different from No Code, musically and aesthetically? Absolutely. But it sounded like Pearl Jam, so I liked it. That was pretty much the extent of the thought or analysis that I gave that record.
They will never release a single that hits me like Alive did in 1991, but really, it'd be incredibly unfair to expect that from the band. I'm not making excuses for production or marketing decisions the band makes, but...I dunno. I feel like they get a lot of shit on these message boards considering how huge the band is and how very pure of heart they seem to be as individuals.
It must be hard to be Pearl Jam, artistically-speaking.

To be fair, most people on here are die hard fans in some capacity. Being critical is on par for any seasoned fan of a specific band or brand of art. The same things happen with other bands, books, or long running tv-series. Like most people, I would like nothing more than for Pearl Jam to knock one out of the park.

Thank you!! I am a die hard fan and proud of it! ......I've been carving Pearl Jam in my arm with the same rusty razorblade for the last 22 years!! So it stays fresh!

JK
But yeah, I am A die hard fan, but I also see the songs as a collective, each album has its gems but they have all affected me in different ways and play to my life like a soundtrack. I don't really rate them.

That's fair, but then again, "knocking one out of the park" means so many things to so many different fans of this band that it would be almost impossible. It's a touch mindblowing to see people hinging their "fandom" so adamantly on how this next album sounds. It's still only a rock band--they've been a great source of inspiration to me over the years, but it's just a band. I, for one, am really impressed how well they've held it all together and stayed true to being accessible, socially conscious dudes...and then they put out Ole and seemingly half the fanbase is not only disappointed, but absolutely indignant and offended by it. It just makes me chuckle.

I have been viewing this forum for years. Had an old account named Duccivespucci but I forgot the password. So, I thought I'd give it a shot again since there's a new album build up. I'm not going to ask for a pm with this new song. I haven't earned that on here if that makes sense.

I don't see how these two things are mutually exclusive. It's 'just a band' that some of us have been following since 1991, but yeah, it's just a band. I don't know if I'm included in one of the 'adamant' here, but all I said was that I wouldn't be a fan anymore if they made a third album I didn't like much. That doesn't mean I won't be a fan of the good stuff, but who's got the time? I'm not sure how that's 'adamantly' anything. So no expectations, but I would like to enjoy the next album.

I'm wondering if this is Sirens...It supposed to be around 5 mins long and a slower song. Although I think everything new might be Sirens so who knows....But i'm diggin it.

So - is the sound quality any good? Like enough to know it's not an old song that's been changed up?
