Their second release (the 'Waiting' EP) has a song called 'So Young' which is basically 'Puzzles and Games (aka early Light Years)'.

As an aside, I do own Bayleaf on CD, but was hoping to track down a digital version to listen on the commute. This thing isn’t just out of print but wiped from the history of the internet. Damn.

It’s been quite a few years since I have revisited this album, in large part because it is not available digitally, which might be a crime. Stone’s first proper solo album is a charming and fascinating dive into ideas and textures that seem to have eluded the Pearl Jam and Brad universes, and at times seems to straddle the two. Nevertheless, all of the tracks here are killer, and really the only criticism is that he should have released something sooner, played in this format more often, and makes one wish he had a full catalogue of these songs released. Fits is an interesting song settling into a bit of a groove until it rolls into Pigeon, an absolute monster of a song. Bayleaf, Unhand Me, Bore Me, and Cadillac are all favorites here, but really everything is fantastic.

As far as a specific memory associated with this record is sadly its release. Feeling numb and full of worry on 9/11, I can remember I needed to get away from the TV, off the news to do something, anything. And so I walked to the local record shop, head spinning, and just sort of rotely got this on release day, as if in some way engaging in this exercise allowed a day to go forward as if it could be uninterrupted. I have never associated listening to the album with that day, but buying it was connected with my first efforts at coping.

Well deserved high ranking, although I still prefer Interiors to it.

Brad - Welcome to Discovery Park

On Brad’s third album, the band for me really show the first bit of holes in their armor. With two nearly perfect albums in their sash, this is the first where things feel a little labored - in part due to the fact that there’s just a ton of more laid back material here. There’s still great material to enjoy in that vibe, like the album opening Brothers and Sisters and If You Could Make It Good, but it’s when they pick things up a bit that the album shines, as in Drop It Down, Revolution, and All Is One. I also really enjoyed Sheepish, Takin’ It Easy, The Beach Boys like Couch T-Bone, and La La La (probably my favorite on this one). So that is to say this was still a really excellent album but perhaps didn’t quite hit as hard as the first two.

Pearl Jam - Riot Act

Riot Act is really the first Pearl Jam album I think that can only really be understood in the context of when it was recorded (perhaps we get there soon enough with Gigaton). From the release of Backspacer, Pearl Jam experiences the death of nine fans during their set at the Roskilde Festival, Bush is then elected President in what at the time might have been the most hotly contested and divisive election in our lifetimes, followed soon thereafter by 9/11 and the lead up to invading Iraq in what a minority felt was a face saving measure based on false pretenses. In grappling with all of this, and naming the album Riot Act, one would get the impression that Pearl Jam was going for the jugular to give voice to these times. Certainly, some songs here directly address these items, such as Love Boat Captain in its recognition of tragedy and a wish to right the ship, Green Disease, Half Full, Bushleaguer, HelpHelp, and Cropduster. The message gets muddled here however in an attempt I think to include as much in the Pearl Jam repertoire as possible without breaking the darker atmosphere the sonics of this album pull you into. Ultimately, taking the b-sides with it, you could in a sense have two albums here: one dealing externally with the forces noted at the outset and another dealing with the personal struggles that are present here as well. Imagine an arc where Pearl Jam deliver the news and come to grips with the societal and political problems here - your Love Boat Captain, Green Disease, Cropduster, Bushleaguer, HelpHelp - followed by Half Full and I Am Mine - and then calls to action with that glimmer of hope of spritziness we like to talk about in Down and Undone. That would be a political statement record, wherein the remaining songs and b-sides that seem to address more personal struggles get their own space.

That all being said, the songs are largely all still great, and many of these continue to strike me in new and interesting ways, but as the larger document, I think the muddled message brings it to the bottom of the Pearl Jam rankings thus far (we still got a ways to go). Perhaps now the thread really begins since we have a hot debate now on our hands.

Bayleaf is so fucking good. It needs a digital release and a vinyl one too.

For some reason, i havent dig into Welcome To Discovery Park until a few years ago. It was also kinda of a black sheep in my mind and the one i care the least along with United We Stand.

Brother and Sisters, Shinin', Takin' It Easy and All Is One are songs I really love from that album.

Agree with the ranking of Riot Act. I love Pearl Jam, but some of the great Pearl Jam - family albums are better than it.

Glad this thread spurred me to give Shame a first listen and Interiors its first listen in probably 20 years. Those are both really good. Don't think I've ever heard Welcome to Discovery Park, but that'll be next.
