I actually think that the show is trying to say the opposite. It's not that it's instant. He's not his father in the final moments. But on the long timeline...

He's just way too educated on and aware of the issues that stem from such behavior, having experienced the pain first-hand, there's just no way. It's not in his character.

It's an interesting theory, but I don't think anything directly tells us it's in his character to follow in the other men's footsteps. I feel his intentions are good throughout the show, and so he will continue with that trajectory after the credits. "White Knighting" isn't at all necessarily a dark path.

Personal info that doesn't pertain to this show specifically but does include this show: I need to really analyze why so many problematic males are identifiable to me out of the gate before deeper understanding and study.
