Our smallest bird is the Goldcrest. Onky 4-9cm long and weighing only 4-6grams (less than your credit card)

I got one of those smart bird feeders for my wife and boy howdy, is it neato? The answer is yes, it is. So far this morning, we have Tufted Titmice, House Finches, Purple Finches, and Black-capped Chickadees. If you insist, I might upload some recordings or pictures of these tirds. It's also cool that it doubles as a security camera, facing my driveway and front door and I can watch the live feed at any time, and it's got motion-detection. In summary, it's neat, and birds are cool sometimes. Also, squirrels are funny.

I love birds and put out feeders. The we got a cat for the mice in the garage (we live in a wooded area) and it’s like I’m just laying got a buffet for the cat. But the birds are adapting. Staying clear of the deck. She still gets one now and again, but not as many.

Moving to this house has been overall great for bird feeding, though. When we lived in the city sparrows would wolf down all the food until I just quit buying seed. Out here I never see sparrows and only see starlings when it’s been below freezing for over a week. Lots of woodpeckers including the shockingly large pileated. In the winter I can hear owls outside but haven’t seen them. Hummingbirds in the summer (greedy, aggressive little bastards—not so good at sharing).

Favorite sound of winter is hearing the sandhill cranes migrating overhead. I used to hear them only at night and it was kind of an otherworldly sound that I couldn’t identify. Sounded like it was coming from behind and between houses as I’d walk the dogs. Finally figured it out and now it’s something to look forward to.

Cool story. In New Zealand we have a lot of cute little birbs in the Acanthisittidae family. They're always flapping around close to the ground. They've existed for millenia in a predator-free land, so they carry on as though everything's their friend.

My cat killed a rifleman once and I thought about giving her up for adoption. I was devastated. I know they're just acting on instinct but that one stung.

I visited Australia in college which of course has a similar issue with cats. I saw poster there about predatory cats that was so graphic i, being from the US where our birds grow up hard in the mean streets, couldn’t believe it. A big orange cat like Jabba the Hutt sized holding a bunch of decapitated birds and lizards with blood pouring down its chin. It was unreal.

Beginning to believe the birds aren't real hype. There is a hawk that now just hangs out in our front yard, even if I walk close with the dogs. Sometimes, he lands on the roof outside my office window while I'm working. Like he's spying on me.

Myna birds are the worst, man. They sound like shit. But they do remind me of Norah cos she was obsessed with that band, so that's nice at least.
