The first time I saw the trailer for Elemental I thought didn't this movie come out years ago? It highly derivative of past Pixar.

Seems a little strange that people suddenly got tired of the Pixar formula and tired cliche plots, but I'm not complaining.

At first I thought it was a sequel to Inside Out but instead of feelings with feelings its the periodic table with feelings.

That’s what I thought it was. So it’s a totally different movie then. Wow

With these kids movies, I’ve discovered that if my daughter knows about it and is excited to go, it’s almost certainly a hit.

Although she does like some stinkers, she doesn’t miss a hit. We saw all 3 of the kids films in the top 10 box office for the year during their opening weekend.

It does look like Inside Out, but that one was pretty popular (even though I thought it looked rather ugly).

Five of the top 10 films of the year so far can be considered flops (Fast X, The Little Mermaid, Ant Man: Quantumania, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, The Flash). That's wild. Budgets need to get under control

The budget thing is probably true. Call me stupid, but I have no idea why budgets are so high nowadays—is it all VFX? Shooting on location? Salaries for big stars? Something else?

and marketing too.

Kinda surprised The Flash is such a big flop. Guessing Gunn rebooting everything didnt help. This is not looking good for Aquaman 2.

Marketing is probably the biggest factor. VFX houses seem to be underpaid, but it's still expensive to do the effects. The money is going somewhere.

I was under the impression that when you see a listed budget for a film that marketing is not included. Surely, that makes some of these films even bigger losers for the studios.

its not included in most cases but its still money they need to get back.

Critical Drinker recently had a video that looks at the maths of it all a bit. He's saying Indy 5 is destined to be a flop in part because it cost $300M. Then add another 50% for marketing and give the cinemas their 50% cut of the box office take and the movie would need to make $900M global box office just to break even. Assuming Harrison Ford or someone else is only getting a salary and not a cut of the profits themselves. And why spend $450M to just break even. This thing would need to be one of the ten or fifteen biggest movies of all time for it to have been worthwhile, money wise.

And that ain't gonna happen

It's not! Marketing is a hidden number and rarely disclosed. The bigger the movie, the bigger the marketing budget, and I've seen a lot of trades that default to doubling the production budget when they estimate how much money a film needs to generate a profit.
