Love WES...It was cool as proof that they were still capable of writing an effective rock song in the quirky, nervy PJ mold, but, comparing it to SoF is almost not fair.
WES has some neat detours, but, ultimately, it sounds like a lot of late-era PJ...Manicured and molded to sound like it slots into the PJ "rocker" category.

SoF sounds like what rock music should sound like. The joy and abandon that comes from five people banging away on instruments and seeing what happens.
Good post oneway.

I *LOVE* WES, but SoF does what it does in such a fresh, organic way that benefits it greatly.

That's it, davey 100%. It sounds organic. Makes all the difference, honestly.

The extended bridge of WES is absolutely awesome, as is the intro and outro, but WES just has little things that hold it back for me. The "sideways thoughts" part always clashed imo and the chorus itself is just kinda quirky, but not something that captured me ever.

Scared of Fear on the other hand, has amazing lyrics, fantastic solos, excellent bridge, an infectious chorus and that awesome outro. It definitely has a similar vibe to WES, but they just took it to another level.
listened to gigaton this AM after Dark Matter and SoF is definitely superior

You're hurting yourself, it's plain to see
I think you're hurting yourself to hurt me

I never dive into lyrics too much, but I can identify with these lines. I think that bad breakup I had with my ex-GF...I think I was hurting myself so that I could hurt her (with my words).

So now when I hear this song it makes me a little sad. But I still love hearing it.

This one hits almost too personal.

This is the biggest grower on this record. Lead through the outro really makes me think of Vs as a whole. The intro and first verse reminds me alot of Saves You. The Chorus reminds me of the Foo Fighters. It is there best opener since Life Wasted. At least I enjoy it the most.

A album of openers , not rankings just for flow

Master Slave
Brain of J
Breakerfall
Last Exit
Sometimes
Go
SOF
WES
Get Right
Gonna See My Friend
Can't Keep

SoF is the 2nd cousin to WES with SoF being the more successful implementation. One thing I note on SoF and Dark Matter in general is the sense of urgency, the pushing of tempo by Matt, and the feeling (rightfully so) of a PJ live experience. In particular comparison between SoF and WES, WES has a sense of lumbering along, almost like Ed's vocal is trying to push the band forward along with him. SoF has the opposite effect, it's more nimble, more urgent, which in turns give a heavier weight and emotion to the vocal (and incredible lyrics by EV).

And WES is my 2nd fav song on Gigaton...

To be honest, they feel like pretty different songs that both do a good job of representing each record. WES feels looser and more exploratory in how its structured, taking right and left turns when it wants to. Scared of Fear is tighter and more pummelling, which feels pretty apt for the album that's coming.

I've definitely come around on Scared of Fear; it was one of the songs that didn't land for me on first listen, but it's probably the most-improved song since then. It may be in my top 5 on the record now.

Those two lines are brutal.
Also these two:

In my weakness
Did I somehow get too loud?

I meant to flag those lyrics earlier (in my weakness...). that's a great line

Those are great lyrics, and a good example of lyrics registering as relatively unimpressive on paper but really packing a wallop in the context of the song and the delivery.

This just came on the radio as I sit here in the car waiting for my wife to come out of the chemist.

Wasn't expecting to hear this as a radio tune. It is Double J I'm listening too though.

For any reason its chorus vocal melody is reminding me Hungry Like The Wolf chorus from Duran Duran. Does it make sense?

They added reverb to the Stern performance on Ed's "hear the voices calling".
It sounds even better than yesterday.

this album starts to get serious for me at "have I lost my friend?"

and then "...as if you never left"

that hurts

No one hears that chorus and expects him to finish off with "being so kind... to let me RIIIIIIIDE"?
