if you post homophobia or transphobia comments on a message board the chance of people who walk by and seeing it are close to nil

if you post a big ol schlong that takes up half my screen and someone walks by i am talking to a lenny clone

in general, ideally, i would think any lifetime ban should only come after at least one clear warning from the mods along the lines of ‘if you do this again, it is a lifetime ban’ unless it was clearly prohibited in an objective and significant way

this is not intended to give people a pass for bad behavior rather to avoid situations where 10+ year community members are logging in to suddenly find out they have a permanent ban with no chance for corrective action

some people will rein it in if they know a lifetime ban is on the line

some people might not

but for those who would change their behaviour, for their benefit, and the community members that enjoy posting with them, if perma ban is on the table, the run up should ideally be much more clear that is at stake so that the person can stop and correct

potentially subjective matters may necessitate advance warning more clearly - e.g. ‘hey i realize some people think this is funny and not intended to be disrespectful, but it is a sensitive topic and some people are offended and we need to stop this now for the benefit of the community. If not, then we have to consider a ban’

retroactively applying stuff would also be potentially unfair, as the community or mod standards of decency or risk appetite may have changed over time and there may not have been explicit warning in the past

that said- i am all for a positive inclusive environment - and for me at least the key takeaway here is to try to contribute better quality content rather than sinking to topics where this type of risk exists

if you have been here for even 5 years and dont understand you dont post porn pictures in various threads you already know you did a no no that is unforgivable. you shouldnt get a chance to plea your way out of it

i believe numbers up is referring to his frequent, intentionally comedic, flippant use of the word "gay" and his subsequent ban
