I'll be very interested to see how this plays out, and what impact that might have on the way television is evolving. This interest will be pure naked curiosity, mind you, as I don't have cable or watch much TV.

I know that a lot of the major networks are looking at redesigning their content delivery calender so that they can try to have new programming available year-round in the near future. I have a feeling that their problem isn't a lack of new content, so much, as it is the fact that they still control when you can watch it. This is probably true for any show, to some extent, but especially with programs that have story arc designs. For a comedy like AD, if you're only ever watching one episode a week, then you're probably missing a lot of the subtler in-jokes and carry-over references. With shows that live on big mystery, or "what will happen" type arcs, fans are often in a constant flux between "holy shit did you see..." and "that was incredibly lame." After all, if the show is building up to some big reveal and fans wait all week for an episode that does nothing more than help prep the emotional base for that eventual reveal, they seem to get really irritated/frustrated/disappointed. And why not? They just waited a week for that shit, and now they're going to have to wait a whole other week. People who watch the show after the fact, though, and are able to access episodes at their preferred pace or leisure, tend to respond a lot more favorably to the depth of those moments. It's like reading a book...who hasn't stayed up stupid late, because they only have a hundred pages left and have to know how it ends (or, because they refuse to believe that Martin wouldn't be able to find SOMEthing more interesting for Tyrion to do before the end of A Dance with Dragons....seriously.....)?

People have been wondering for years if subscription-style media was the future of TV, and I just don't see that. But I think that shows like House of Cards and Arrested Development are very interesting because Netflix has the nuts to just cede control of that one surprisingly-important thing.

One of the best things about AD was that it had a limited run, so it didn't overstay its welcome. Most American shows go on way too long for me. The British model of two seasons for everything pretty much insures that there won't be any throwaway episodes, and while that's kinda TOO few episodes, I'd rather that than 10 season runs.
