I was waiting for other people to! I didn't want you directing it at me! You don't need to tell me! But I feel you spent too much time talking about the hoodie comment again.

If you refuse, I'll understand. You'll be entering the lions den. But show some courage, eh?
There is some validity to the notion that we all have our prejudices. We do.

I say this without an ounce of prejudice or judgement. If there is anyone I have interacted with over the past ten years that doesn't, it may be Lament. I mean that sincerely.

I don't have a problem with the notion that people have some prejudices within them that they deal with. But they have to DEAL with them. Saying "I'm going to walk on the other side of the street cause I'm scared of a black kid in a hoodie" isn't dealing with it. It's succumbing to it. If you are that willing to succumb to it, then you're obviously comfortable with it. If you are comfortable with your prejudices against an entire race, you're a racist. You've given in to fear and accepted a world where the onus is on someone you know absolutely nothing about to prove to you that he or she isn't a threat, and until they do that, they are. In the grand scheme of things, far more black kids in hoodies are NOT mugging people than are mugging them. You're more likely to get killed in a car crash than you are to get mugged by a black kid in a hoodie. Do any of the people who walk on the other side of the street take the same precautions to avoid getting into a car? Getting into a car is far more dangerous. Or is this "risk aversion" you spoke of earlier just another way to make yourself feel ok about how comfortable you are with your prejudices?

Um, what I said before (and of course went unnoticed again), is that Cuban is not proud (and neither am I) of any prejudice, or insecurities we hold. His intentions are to get over them. He wants to do so through empathizing with racist thoughts, not sympathizing, in order to get to the root. I see this as a very Christian oriented philosophy. Is anyone here prejudice against Christians?@SkitchP wrote:Lament wrote: Saying "I'm going to walk on the other side of the street cause I'm scared of a black kid in a hoodie" isn't dealing with it. Because he legitimately cares about bigotry and those that treat people differently based exclusively on outward appearance and their own insecurities? I fail to see how HE is the one that needs to calm down. And up until today, i was the boards resident racist!

Oh, this is a Christian philosophy. Good thing no one has ever invoked Christianity to defend racism before.

“If I see a black kid in a hoodie at night on the same side of the street, I’m probably going to walk to the other side of the street."Harry Lime wrote:His intentions are to get over them.
He didn't say "I might at first want to walk to the other side of the street." He didn't say "I used to want to walk to the other side of the street." He said "I'm probably going to walk to the other side of the street." He's ok with his prejudices on this level. If he were intending to get over them, at this point, some fifty or so years into his life, he should be able to stay on the same side of the street and realize that this kid is far more likely to just leave him completely alone than other outcome.
