Nevermind. Wikipedia is my friend.

But the second question stands: Does any other Dylan sound like this?

It was recorded with Lanois during the Oh Mercy sessions. That album is really nice but a song like SoD is too big, demands too much and has too much weight.

Lanois also co-produced Time Out Of Mind. Similar sounds but there's nothing really like Series Of Dreams. It's a one off.

Man, that's a bummer. I'm still trying to figure where to get "in" to Dylan since Highway 61 Revisited didn't do it for me. Maybe I'll take Joey's suggestion and try Desire.

You know what's another amazing song that never made it on an album? Bruce Springsteen's "Lift Me Up". That's seriously one of the best things he's ever done.

I believe the only thing it's been on was The Essential Bruce Springsteen. I could be wrong, though. And sort of like "Series of Dreams", it doesn't really sound like anything else I've heard from him.

At a stretch:

I wish Jessie Winchester had had a producer to serve him covers in his final years. The resulting body of work would have made Johnny Cash's look tired and heartless.

Jessie's Shama Lama Ding Dong just ruins me.

Definitive version, as far as I'm concerned

The album version is nice but kinda chintzy

Filling Station in general has a bit of a "CD by some local guy" feel, and that doesn't do it any favors (which is part of why I wish he'd had someone great to work with at the end)...but having said that, I like the dusting of 50's momentous in Shama. I listen to the studio version a stupid lot.

But yeah...I originally bought it after seeing that Costello special. I'd hate to be sitting on a stage, expected to sing after Jessie.

I have never heard much of Jessie Winchester but his Ghosts kicked off a recent Uncut magazine CD. Seriously, it stopped me in my tracks. I mean, I literally had to just sit there and let it wash over me. Powerful stuff, obviously all the more for his passing.
