Yeah, with all due respect, these are not criticisms of Ed as a writer; they're criticisms of his character, which I suppose is as reasonable a thing as any to object to but is not the same thing as and largely holds no bearing on his ability to shape and manipulate language or articulate whatever fraction of his experience he does elect to share in song. He certainly has his faults in that department, but the fact that he doesn't make it a point of whipping himself via lyric for the sins of his past is not one of them. As someone who is pretty intimately familiar with the works of Dylan, Springsteen, and Bono, I think you greatly overstate the degree to which these artists "turn the mirror on themselves" in comparison to Ed (honestly I think one could level the exact same criticisms at "Gone" that you have leveled at "Off He Goes" -- ultimately it comes down to how you choose to perceive the motivations of human beings that you know nothing about), and even still I'm not sure that a few lines or even a whole song now and then necessarily supports the idea that these writers are somehow self-aware in a way that another writer isn't. The ability to psychoanalyze oneself is not a prerequisite for writing rock lyrics, even over many years. And if you're going to accuse of Eddie of pretending to be a messianic figure and then hold Bono up as an example to the contrary just because he has a few fleeting moments of self-doubt in between Jesus Christ poses, I can only surmise there's something at play in your criticism beyond the hard evidence.

his reaction to being shunned by Wilt Chamberlain in "Sweet Lou" could have all been his own fault

You know, I always wondered what that half-buried, frenzied "OR AM I" that comes right after "Slide on next to me. I'm just a human being" was all about.

I also wondered what kind of a rampant asshole actually feels the need to make sure people realize that they're just a human being.

Blake's mixes are like toast and butter. BOB's mixes are like toast and butter, with another piece of toast on top.

Guys, I think a Kevin Davis V. Lament feud has the potential to be the best thing ever on the internet.

True! It seems that whenever they are not working with BOB they have loads and loads of stuff. There are lots of Ten outtakes. Also on the Binaural <> S/T stretch there are so many gems. The S/T leaks of the past months have proved that, and I have a feeling that there is more stuff from the RA era, see also:
