some insane contortion of thumb and fingers that I will never figure out. I'm just going to keep wedging my thumb in between the two sticks like a rube.

They really are. Especially for people who eat as much rice as the Asians. Chopsticks seem like the least efficient way to deliver tiny pieces of rice into your mouth.

Properly steamed rice usually clumps together, making chopsticks much more useable than you imply.
