Okay, lets talk about Lament's mix.

P Control: This was the highlight of the mix. This is the kind of song only Prince could pull off. Awesome for all the right ridiculous reasons. I love everything about this.

Thunder: For the most part Prince's spiritual/serious side loses me a bit and the excess that is awesome on a song like P Control is just a bit too heavy handed. Musically this was a smart song to include, but I'm not into the chorus, and Prince's choruses really take over his song.

antoherloveholenyohead: this was okay. Felt a bit prince by numbers. Hit all the things you expect to find in a prince song, but not arranged in a way that was particularly interesting

17 days: this was another standout. A nice showcase for how expressive his voice can be (although it's still all high drama)

Anna Stesia: This was decent. Felt a little too familiar and the God is love outro didn't really do much for me.

Erotic City: I think the best part of this song is how subtle it is.

Girls & Boys: Stuff like this or Erotic City would never make a regular playlist of mine, but they're fun songs.

Lets Work: Another one of those 'prince songs' that I like if I feel like listening to Prince, but is not a song I'd seek out on its own.

Partyup: Reminds me a bit of baby I'm a star, but not nearly as good

Automatic: One of the better sex is great songs. Reminded me a bit of 1999

Ballad of Dorthy Parker/Dinner with Delores: These were both pretty clever songs.

She's always in my hair: This didn't really do much for me. It's not like it was a bad song or anything, but it was another case of Prince being Prince without being particularly interesting about it.

I wish you heaven: Nice enough, but unremarkable

The Cross: the start reminds me of U2's The First Time. I liked this one a lot. I like it when he goes for broke with his vocals. Why are his guitars always so subdued?

Last December was pretty good, but feels a bit thin compared to a sublime anthem like 7.

Prince's catalog is vast, so I'm sure it's hard to make a mix. It's a great mix from start to finish if you want to listen to some Prince, but I also leave it feeling like it's the only Prince mix I'll ever need. I'm not compelled to dig much into the catalog beyond what I already know, and other than P Control nothing here really comes close to matching my favorite songs by him. 17 days and the Cross were also highlights.

Thanks Lament :)

Automatic deserves a deeper listen, Stip. At first glance, it may appear to be a “sex is great” song; it’s anything but. I’d call it one of Prince’s darker songs, certainly during this era. It also clocks in at nearly ten minutes. This on an album that contained two of Prince’s most masterful pop gems (1999 and Little Red Corvette), so he was clearly aiming for something different with this track and I’d say he nailed it.

Automatic describes a man involved in a relationship that has become rote, or automatic. He’s not in love, but the sex is so good that he can’t or won’t up and leave. He’s trapped. And this is a high maintenance woman, constantly asking if he loves her, if he’ll kiss her, if he’ll give her a back rub. He responds to each demand with the same robotic, machine-like response.

You ask me if I love you, it’s automatic.
You ask me if I’ll kiss you, it’s automatic.
I’ll rub your back forever, it’s automatic.
I’ll go down on you all night, it’s automatic.

He compares sex to looking for a needle in a haystack. A lot of work. But he responds, as ever, with machine-like obedience. Not only is this woman high maintenance, she’s a drama queen.

“Every time you cry, me cry. Boo Hoo,” Prince chides sarcastically. She won’t cut him a break: “Even when I’m right, I’m wrong,” he gripes to no avail. “Just tell me what to do,” he intones robotically, frustrated but unable or unwilling to leave.

The music brilliantly underscores this dynamic. Keep in mind that Prince played every note of this song, save for the female backing vocals. The main riff (played on a synthesizer, which only adds to the artifice, alienation, and robotic quality) ascends, trying to take off and then turns right back around and returns exactly where it began. Over and over and over. Ever been in a relationship like this? I have, and this song summarizes it perfectly.

In the song’s spoken word coda, Prince starts off whispering a series of sweet, nothings, mostly hot air: “No man deserves your love … I pray that when you dream, you dream of how we kissed. Not with our lips but with our souls.” This ends with a plea. “I wonder if you have any mercy. Don’t torture me.” The song then gets even weirder with two female voices tag-teaming off of Prince, blending and melding together until you can’t really tell who’s who. “I’m addicted to your pain. It’s automatic.” The music starts to break down. Shards of guitar crash the proceedings out of nowhere. There are a series of moans that seem to be orgasms, but end up sounding like people crying. It’s automatic.

Prince had written a few songs on Dirty Mind that hinted at a dark side. On the 1999 album, and this song in particular, he let the demons run free. He later followed this path to even darker realms (particularly on the Black Album) and eventually found religion and so-called enlightenment and never did this type of material again. Too bad because when Prince explored the darker side of sex and allowed his predilection for experimentation to run loose, he produced a series of masterpieces that still stun to this day.
