I hated Roland in Book 1 but I think we were supposed to hate him. He's Ahab.

Yeah, maybe. But that didn't work on me if that was the case. I love Roland in the first book. And reading it again has only reinforced that feeling.

In news that has flown completely under the radar...
Alex McGregor has been (apparently) cast as Susan Delgado in The Dark Tower, according to IMDB.

Susannah? There's no way that the characters announced all appear in the same movie.

No. she's playing Susan, not Susannah.
And, yeah, the characters announced are all in this first movie. As of now, there are no further films planned. They want to wait and see how this one does before committing to more of them.

I meant maybe the Vikings girl is playing Susannah. Race reversal.

Oh. Obviously, you meant that. Sorry. I was reading fast at work.
Yeah, could be. But I'd be pretty upset with that race reversal. My hope is that she's playing someone else. But we'll see.

But we wouldn't need to endure her Book 2 origin story. Maybe.

I love her origin story, personally. But I'm clearly in the minority.

Why? It would work because Roland is black now and then Susannah could be a racist white woman.
Hot bit of writing in today's climate though. Might be rough.

I think race is far more important to Susannah's character than anyone else in the series. And it's not about the racial tension, either. Obviously, that's a big part of the book but I don't really care how they handle that (or if they cut it all together) from the movie.
Far more interesting is the notion that a man, any man, kidnapped her. I'd rather them keep her a black character and play up the male/female, distrust of men angle. Also, it could be really compelling to see some black on black racism. She could call him out for betraying "his people." She could view him as an Uncle Tom, which again, is more compelling and less recycled and lazy than just casing a white girl because Idris Elba is black.
I'm not gonna abandon ship if they cast a white girl, but I will be disappointed. It's probably the only bit of casting they could do that would bum me out, actually. But whatever.

True, I forgot about that part. The "honky" parts are what come more immediately to mind, I guess.
