The beauty of the moment of obi wans death is, he looks to his left and he sees Luke and leia together for the first time since they were newborns. There’s the new hope. For the Jedi and for the galaxy. He turns back to Vader knowing his mission is accomplished and the hope that will stop Vader is right there and Vader is completely unaware of it, puts his saber to his face and closes his eyes and becomes one with the force. (Vader didn’t kill obi wan FYI).

Did no one watch the video about how you'd explode if you got hit by a lightsaber?

Now wondering does B know how a lightsaber works? Or a Death Star

It’s getting embarrassing now

The first hour of this is my favorite Star War. Luke’s whole introduction is pitch perfect “young man stuck out on the farm” storytelling. The sunset scene reflects a moment of my life back at me, heart and soul, so exactly true that it hurts.

And then he goes to a small town that seems wild to him but is really just a dump, gets in a bar fight and loses, watches his friends get thrown out but doesnt join them, and eventually gets chased out of town by the cops.

After that the story gets less believable but it’s still really good.

I also love the beginning of the movie. It’s very pure and a little simple, yet really sets the mood for the coming adventure.

This movie really is lightning in a bottle. Don’t know if any of them knew they were making such a classic. It could easily have been a run of the mill 70s sci-fi/fantasy b-movie, but instead it’s one of the best ever.,

The designs, Ford’s charisma, Fisher’s sass, Guiness’ class and experience, Hamill’s likability. It all fits perfectly together. The story is somewhat simple, but leaves plenty of room for your own imagination. There’s the jedi, the clone wars, the death star, Darth Vader (and that voice!), lightsabers, space travel, the mood in the pub at the beginning, heroics at the end.

Ends up being a five star movie. Watching it now.

We are finally moved into our new home, so I let my son pick the first movie we watch on our new entertainment system. He picked this.

Sorry, but they created lived-in rural settings for New Hope that were authentic on a level that no other Star Wars project ever matched. The first third just doesn’t feel like sci fi to me, even when it wants to. That’s incredibly grounding for a space opera, and the realness of Luke’s home setting grants a legitimacy to his journey that isn’t matched anywhere else in big, epic space cinema...Star War or otherwise.

I’ve said before that his intro captures the unaddressable restlessness of growing up in South Dakota better than any other movie I’ve ever seen. But today, I was even looking at the ragged wear-and-tear on the Jawa treads with awe. I could smell them. They looked so familiar.

I really think that making the small feel real in order to sell the epic is much more important than amping the epic up with special effects.

My son watched this for the first time last night (he turns 6 this week). He knows the general story of the first six films due children's books, merchandise, etc. but he didn't know the beat for beat plot points. Despite a few distractions and pauses, he loved it. Very memorable moment sharing the experience with him.

"C3-PO is such a worrier"

"The music is incredible!"

"They basically blow up a Death Star every movie, but I don't know how they will do it!"
