That's insane.
It hasn't stopped him before.

Though not anymore than S/T :\
Which is why this becomes sticky to me. But still, VFC on the heels of RA makes way more sense as connective tissue to that than S/T, to me. I have a hard time defining a era before, if that makes sense. I know chud just did that but I'm not sure I actually agree.

Hmm. I think Riot Act is a direct response to Binaural and Roskilde, as much as S/T is a direct response from their experiences during VFC and the election.

That's interesting...
You might be right, actually. I have to think about it.

That being said: The way they were still playing as a live band on VFC, Canada, and even into 06 is way more reminiscent of Pre PRAMG

Is it weird that I think of Riot Act more as a war/protest album than S/T?

I do think its weird because ive always connected to it more on an emotional battle level. emotional and intrinsic rather than a fight outwardly against a political system. The target of most ed's words are towards himself.
"To myself i surrender, to the one ill never please" seems to sum up most of the album for me.

I actually think it's a really uplifting album. I don't really see the depressing argument. Every song has a spark, every song is about life and will. It's a really powerful and positive record. That's one of the reasons I love it so much.

Yea, no, I agree. You have to really dig for it though. I loved it for many years because it was a companion for me going through really hard stuff. It was okay that it wasn' a fun album, or immediately uplifting. It was nice knowing that - Shit, if Ed Ved can feel like this, its okay I do too. That itself was uplifting enough for me.
Now that im in a different place, i hear some of the songs in a different aspect and can pull out different viewpoints.
I love Riot Act.

THE PRAMG label came into existence when the board decided that pearl jam's music sucks now and they only care about making money even though they're also too lazy to do anything to actually make money. Since S/T is the official start of their being independent and you had the noticeable uptick in promotional visibility it's the starting point of that era. It makes sense to include everything prior to the S/T sessions in the Riot Act era of the band. The tours, one off songs, promotional singles, etc. are still within the gravitational orbit of the previous album.
There are no thematic dimensions to PRAMG, so the fact that S/T is in conversation with Riot Act and Binaural is irrelevant. Backspacer is every bit as much a part of that conversation. The fact that S/T is now finally beginning its reassessment and people are discovering it's actually a solid record that they like is what complicates this. We only use PRAMG pejoratively. But when that phrase first came into existence it was clearly intended to include S/T.

Oh, and
Life Wasted
World Wide Suicide
Comatose
Parachutes
The Fixer
Force of Nature
Mind Your Manners
Lightning Bolt
Sleeping By Myself
Yellow Moon
Though it only has two songs on here Backspacer is my favorite album of the three.
