There's one positive thing about Dark Matter and Running:

I won't burn them before the record comes out.

While these are 2 ok songs, this is so incredibly far removed from the magic of the period up until 2005. I'm totally losing interest and at this point, I'm wondering if this band should not better call it quits, which makes me a little sad.

Obviously, they can do whatever they want to do. Not my decision, just my personal feeling.

Sometimes new songs drop without any of these.. Just a visualizer on youtube and people call it a single.

Dark Matter had a physical release as well and was sent to radio stations? But still no video, perhaps the video that was recorded in LA was not for DM or Running? And this is still al a lead up to whatever the real first single will be? Waiting for Stevie?

Running does not have a video, nor a physical release. It's on Spotify as a single, but doesn't have original artwork. In the past Ive seen single track releases on Spotify change from single to album track once the album was out. When uploading to Spotify you can only brand your song as single, EP or albumtrack.

Wasn't Supersonic out before the release of Backspacer? And no one calls that a single, right?
you're right about the vagueness of the term "single" in 2024; personally I think they just threw out "Running" as another taste of the album, and it'll sink into being just an album track once the rest is out
This...The designation of a single is essentially devoid of all meaning in 2024. Pumping out those vinyl variants and juicing those first week sales, driven by the devotion of the die-hards, so that you can sell 30k-50k and get to number one is the game.

Once the hardcore fans pre-order, second week sales fall off a cliff, everyone moves on, and the songs settle into playlist shuffle along with the rest of the streaming catalog.
Spot on.

A “single” has no meaning for most these days. There are songs that are released all the time which are not part of a “record” in the traditional sense. Sometimes those songs are from a forthcoming album (ha…CDM reference) but many times not.

Running might be Pearl Jam’s weakest single (from an album) to date, imo. Doesn’t mean I don’t like it for what it is and the energy but definitely lacking depth for me.

I hate Running but even I would put it above I Am Mine
I was trying to decide what would be next in line for weakest and it is probably Lightning Bolt/ATW/Gone.

Save You is a shit single, too.

Fine song. Terrible choice for a single.

yeah, and at the time a very different approach after coming from Binaural, very different sound, closer to REM.

Could totally see Michael Stipe singing that one- good call!

it was pointed out at the time i think, that it sounded like REM. And i think Ed said they had that band in mind when they did the album, they consciously tried to make a more accesible record.

I can see REM being a guide post for Riot Act. Pearl Jam however would never end up making anything that was REM on the nose.

Green Disease could be a REM song though
