look at it this way: Ortiz' induction (which I don't necessarily buy will happen) could pave the way for Martinez down the road...how many years left on the ballot does Edgar have?

It has, but it's wrong.

I used to think Ortiz in the HOF was laughable, but this last season brought me around to at least considering it. If he could get to 500 hrs he might have a legit shot.

If the east coast machine can get Jim Rice in, David Ortiz is a shoo-in.

Tram and Lou continue to be screwed.

Trammell should have been in years ago, he might be one of the more underrated players of the modern era. Rice never should have gotten in, it was like they were just dying to put someone in that year that didnt have the taint of steroids whether they belonged or not.

Agreed 100%, although Whitaker may be more deserving than trammell.

I absolutely adore what Dan Lebatard did. I hope someone has the balls to do it again next year... and his ballot was totally sound in comparison with any of the jerkoffs that didnt include Maddux.

I think everyone who likes baseball loves what he did. His ballot was 100% defensible. But no, let's make sure he doesn't get to vote so we can continue giving votes to the 16 guys who didn't vote for Maddux or the guy who voted for Jacque Jones or the guy who's openly admitted he want vote for anyone and is going to hand in a blank ballot to spite other writers.

The BBWAA is the worst.

For what it's worth this Red Sox fan could give two shits that Rice got in. When I was a kid, I approached him for an autograph. He gave it to me, but not without a look of severe discontent that was super scary. He's a dick and his suits suck.

It has, but it's wrong.
if they are still voting for the right guys (or at least, guys who you can at least make some argument for), and they throw a vote some dude's way for the hell of it, I don't see the harm....if one writer voted for Maddux/Glavine/Thomas/Biggio/Raines and then voted for Hideo Nomo because they had a good relationship with him or somesuch, I really don't care

now, if they're voting for Jacque Jones and not Greg? Maddux, or if they're voting for Jacque Jones on a full ballot while leaving someone truly deserving off, that's different

It needs to be a public ballot, because these guys should absolutely be subject to public ridicule.

For the record, I have no problem with Ortiz getting in if he can put up a couple more big seasons to finish his career. But even then he'll be nowhere near the candidate Edgar Martinez is, and I think a lot of voters who are currently against Martinez because of the DH issue would vote for Ortiz anyway.

His ballot ended up being legit, but the last thing I want is Hall of Fame voting going to deadspin readers.

I would take that over grumpy old retired writers who don't care to do research and use their ballots to try to make some kind of point.

Edgar should be in too... DH or not, he was one of the best hitters of his generation and one of the best right-handed hitters of all time. The funny thing is, if he had played in the field and played the worst defense any player had ever played, voters would be falling all over themselves to vote him in. Put that DH next to his name, though, and he doesn't stand a chance.
I was thinking the same thing...
greatest hitter of all time... BUT hes a DH... and only plays half the game, he doesnt help his team in the field at all, we cant put him in the Hall.
Worst fielder of all time gives up so many runs, but man can he hit, hes the best hitter of all time so you can live with the bad defense lets put him in.

how do they even have that conversation?
