so my bro and sis in law are getting my niece a record player for her 18th bday b/c she loves music. they want everyone to give her our favorite records as a gift. my first thought was yield/no code, but having the awesome brother I have he already has that covered. my next thought was OK Computer. i was almost hesitant and wanted something more upbeat, but as far as records go, this one might have effected me more than any other album. i know she knows who radiohead is (im her uncle), but i don't think she's listened to them much. i'm pretty excited. if nothing else, i expect the music to partly explain why I am such a god damn awesome uncle lol.

Time to spark some debate and discussion - a Radiohead journey!

For me, Radiohead has always been a personally divisive band - there are moments when I am awe struck by their creativity and others where I wonder what the big deal is. I have heard a solid chunk of their albums but not it all. So time to tackle these albums and report back.

Pablo Honey - this one is usually derided by fans, perhaps in large part because it’s not as representative of where they would go. It’s living in its moment in 1993: an album full of very obvious influences from U2 and R.E.M. plus the mainstay loud-quiet-loud formula dominated that era. All that said, this album isn’t nearly as bad as people let off. Creep is probably their best known song, and the unedited version lets off just a little more bitterness. You, Stop Whispering, Ripcord, Prove Yourself, Blow Out, Anyone Can Play Guitar, Thinking About You, and I Can’t are all songs you can comfortably walk away as highlights. Granted, they are not quite as inspired as Radiohead’s catalogue will bring, and they won’t ever knock you out of your comfort zone, but these serve as a bridge from a distinct amalgam of 90s sounds and influences into their soon to be transition to masterminds changing the rock music landscape.

The Bends

Hearing this directly after Pablo Honey really gives me a different perspective on this album. I always thought of it as a great album, and one of Radiohead’s best. More so now, I can hear more connective tissue with the prior album. This feels like an expansion of that first album in sound and theme - a perfecting of this particular craft. Radiohead is still yet to fully embrace the electronic elements that became more of their signature, so this comes in much more refined and nuanced than Pablo Honey, and really the best songs here blow away anything on Pablo Honey. I had already been a fan of the classics here, but on this listen throw in Bones, (Nice Dream), and Black Star on to the pile with Planet Telex, High and Dry, Fake Plastic Trees, and My Iron Lung. They wouldn’t have gotten away with recreating this particular sound forever but damn if they didn’t catch lightning in a bottle here. Truly outstanding album.

OK Computer

During this sort of intense listening process, certain albums end up being elevated and others deflated by the intense focus and in the nature of powering through quickly. In the case of OK Computer, the album for me is elevated from great album to all-time great. This was the sort of album I would have thought could age poorly given the leap they take into new territory. If anything, time has proven the opposite for this, a point of reference in modern rock soundscapes that owe more to a dedication to the song than its parts.

Getting away for a moment from that level of abstract thought, the songs here are nothing short of amazing. They take twists and turns and deliver everything from the thoughtful to the visceral excitement of taking things as far as they could go. Airbag and Electioneering are simply badass. Paranoid Android builds perfectly, as does Climbing Up the Walls. Basically every note is hit exactly where it needs to and yet the sounds can still surprise you 23 years in. Incredible.

Kid A

This is the third consecutive album that Radiohead would release to cement their legacy as one of rock music’s great acts and contributors to its possibilities- especially since the 90s. Here we find them pushing boundaries even more and expanding the palate further - experimental, electronic psychedelia that still stays within that credo of the song being greater than its parts. Here it comes more over the course of the whole product and the album from cover to cover becomes more important than then individual tracks. Songs here are great on their own - Everything in its Right Place, The National Anthem, How to Disappear Completely, Optimistic, and Idioteque are all great on their own, but so much better in the context of the album. A Dark Side of the Moon for a modern soundscape.

Amnesiac

Whether it’s in my brain or intentional (I didn’t do the research), this is sort of a companion piece to Kid A. But where the quieter moments on Kid A transition to the next movement, here there’s more of a division where the first half of the album feels like the band is asleep, and sort of wakes up in the middle. Really from I Might Be Wrong through the end, this album is fantastic. It’s not that the first third of the album is bad, but it could use some variation in tempo. The atmosphere and work on Packt Like Sardines... and Pyramid Song is nice, but doesn’t quite pull you in the same as I Might Be Wrong, Knives Out, or Morning Bell/Amnesiac. The album also ends particularly strong with the concluding duo of Like Spinning Plates (which actually feels like you are on a spinning plate, go figure), and the 180 they do on the loungy Life in a Glasshouse, with horns and a laid back smoky room feel (I can even imagine a modern Bob Dylan singing this one).

Pyramid Song could be their best, but those other two

I tested my new Sonos sound bar and subwoofer out by blasting pulk / pull revolving doors and it was incredible.

Their production is always top notch, but as far as song quality, those two just aren't.

I mean, think about this, could you cover either of those songs with an acoustic guitar? The songs don't really go anywhere. They're just all about the effects.
