The Vader thing's easy. Star Wars prostheses have nerve interfaces. How else could they use their artificial limbs so effectively?

Or maybe his stump went down that far. His limbs weren’t all severed cleanly at the joints.

Remember when the medical droid poked Luke's hand at the end of Empire, and he yelped?

Yeah you gotta have nerve sensation in those limbs or it wouldn’t work. When my sciatic nerve was pinched and at its worst, I had to use a cane because I couldn’t really feel my left leg (with the exception of the excruciating pain).

Or I guess more relatable, when your foot falls asleep, you put weight on it, and nearly fall over.
