The Heat have played good basketball for like a single two week stretch this season. Pathetic.

Every one of these losses to the Nets has felt very, very flukish in a vacuum, but can you sweep a team 4-0 and it still be flukish? Ugh.

But seriously, this Heat team does not inspire nearly the same level of confidence as previous Heat teams, and remember how close they were to losing each of the last two seasons. Maybe they still have that extra gear to get to and will win it all. It's definitely possible. In fact, they probably have the best odds in the league, not because they're the best team like they were last year (because they're not) but because their path to the championship will be easier than everybody's in the west. And nobody in the east is winning the title, even if they do knock off Miami.

The Heat are playing the first 43 minutes of games pretty much exactly as well as they did the last couple years. The difference is those last 5 minutes. In the past, Miami would turn up the pressure defensively and just choke the life out of the vast majority of teams. That just doesn't happen this season. Even when you can tell they are trying to ramp up pressure there are almost always cracks in the defense and the opposition ends up getting easy scores. Previously the game would be close with 5 minutes left and then Miami would go on a 10-0 run to end the game, now they just trade baskets. Offensively they're still insanely efficient, but man the defense down the stretch just hasn't clicked.

tldr version: I'm nervous about the playoffs. Not panicked worried, and I do think the Heat will win the East, but I'm not nearly as confident as I would like to be, and I can definitely see the Heat losing at any point from Round 2 or later.

I see one of two scenarios:

1) This team is older and playing 100 games for 3 straight seasons has started to take its toll on the team, specifically some of the older veterans. Constantly playing teams at their best while playing such a frenetic defensive style has caused both physical and mental fatigue.
Other teams are starting to figure them out, beating them in the post and on offensive sets that do not include many pick and rolls. On defense they are forcing Miami to beat them with long mid range shots.

2) They are on total cruise control. They know exactly what it takes to get to the final rounds of the playoffs and they are just doing the bare minimum, similar to the Lakers in the third year of their 3 peat in the early 2000's.
They will probably go far in the playoffs, but you are right. There is cause for concern.

Agreed. I feel like they're mostly on cruise control, but I do worry that when they flip the switch they're going to discover that they simply aren't as good as they were last year. Even if that's true, though, they could still win the whole thing.

Also, the hidden downside of letting the Pacers take the 1 seed is that they basically just got a first round bye, and beating the Hawks might give them some confidence and help them get back on the same page. I wouldn't have been surprised if Washington or Charlotte put a good scare into them, but oh well.
