So at the moment I'm expecting Extreme's "More Than Words" mixed with Bon Jovi's "Always".

Yeah, that is probably the most commercial song they've ever made. Heavy production/layers in there.
If somebody had released this song in 1994-2002, I would have pointed to it and said "See, THAT'S exactly what Pearl Jam will never sound like."

**That's not a values statement. That's an explanation of what makes it confusing to hear for the first time.
Completely true. Eddie sounds the best he's sounded in almost a decade. No issues with him, but the music is just a little.....bland.....????

See. I agree - he sounds great in this song. He sounds absolutely terrible in Swallowed Whole. He's not doing his multiple syllable-approach here.

Eddie does sound really good, though.

When the solo kicked in, I kind of thought, okay, here we go. But it plateaus then comes down, a la Unthought Known after "nothing left."

However, I don't see this ruining the album for me, or even really spoiling the first half.

The first part of the song sounds a little too Train-like for me, but it has a nice second half. Ed sounds great minus the random falsetto parts.

I'm not on this leak ride, but the review impressions I'm getting could go for any albums they've ever released. Aside from a few exceptions, PJ have always had the words like "bland", "heartfelt", "emotional", "straightforward", "experimental attempt", surrounding them, all the way back to Ten. Alive and Even Flow were either beloved by heart-on-sleeve loving or scoffed at by ironic alt-fans. Oceans was the "weird, cool and atmospheric" song on Ten like maybe Pendulum will be here, etc, etc It's always been that way, and it still seems to be that way now. Maybe it's opened up a little more with the internet?

You'll like this song if you liked Betterman and Wishlist style songs. It's a commercial song that will get recognition. If you don't like that, you'll hate this. It's a pop song. Meaning nothing more than... popular culture will like it.

So, my guess, most here will hate it. #hipsters
