I'd like to see the NFL move to 15-yard PIs instead of calling them spot fouls.

My friend and I had this discussion recently. I ended up voting that they keep it as-is (even though it kinda sucks), bc if it’s a deep pass, defenders will just start interfering on purpose to prevent a 45-yard gain when they can just get a 15-yard penalty

I'm really surprised this doesn't happen more in college ball.

It doesn't happen in college because there's actually not a lot of opportunity to "intentionally" pass interfer on deep balls. Lots of wide-open receivers in college.

But even in the NFL, where windows are tighter, there aren't actually a ton of opportunities to intentionally PI on deep balls in the average game. If you look at Rodger's two deep balls last night on one the DB couldn't have tackled/intentionally PI'd him anyway and on the other the dude tried to tackle him and couldn't.

Many/most PIs happen now when the DB has his back to the QB and the receiver comes back for the ball and you'd still see a lot of those.

When a DB gets "burned," it's typically within 15 yards of the line anyway.

Considering how short the average NFL pass still is and the actual number of times the opportunity to intentionally PI would arise, changing to 15 yards would have very little actual impact on most games and get rid of some of the cheap/ticky-tack PI calls that result in huge gains and change the course of a game.

Brutal 2nd half for the Packers last night. McCarthy has to go.

trying to think why these owners are so reluctant to add a few more spots to the rosters to make up for the constant flow of injuries....

you figure that like 5 more players on the roster can't be that much more expensive, esp if you only upwardly adjust the cap by a little bit

but then you get guys who go on IR in preseason, and duds like Dez who don't even play a snap - and all the sudden you are on the hook for an ACL surgery and months of rehab

is that what's really going on here? medical costs?

or is this another 'george soros is puppetmaster and doesn't want it' type thing

It makes zero sense not to add the entire practice squad as roster spots today and there’s no real need for inactives, the only thought against it i guess is the possibility for a lack of competitive balance. But that said, make the trading deadline week 15 or so, so playoff teams can load up and out of it teams can sell off.

They’re paying a damn figure head 55 million a year. There’s plenty of cash.
The NFL is a war of attrition - I wouldn't support expanding the active roster. I think limiting to a certain amount of players per team means that the coaches and GMs have to concentrate more on players 1 - 55. Teams that have found success over the last several years or so almost always had to deal with a significant injury or two or three or four. Just look at Philly last year at QB.

I'm biased here because that's been the blueprint for the Pats - concentrating on all players equally w/ intense evaluation, etc. Of course, other teams have mastered this as well.
we would have also accepted "this isn't a problem for my team, because he prefers to win with used car salesmen"
:D

Well, fair point, but I did mention Philly's success last year with a backup QB, and teams like the Steelers, Broncos, and Baltimore do a good job at putting in the scouting work to find those gems.

The Falcons are a colossal pile of poorly coached shit.

Can’t wait to see them get eviscerated again on Thursday.
