but these days I try not to compare songs to other (earlier) songs; the only question I'm asking myself is "am I enjoying it right now?"

DOTC is a minor miracle at this stage in their career. Cant imagine anything they make going forward touching it. But yes im with you i do enjoy all four songs to varying degrees. To my surprise ive had Running in my head the last couple of days despite not listening to it much.Ms Harmless wrote: that's my ranking also if I'm honest, but I enjoy all four songs

Re: Running
I have high hopes for the album still; I don't know if it can better Gigaton, because Gigaton's more naturalistic production was the icing on the cake that this album won't have, so the songs would have to be stunning to beat it, but I do think it can equal it in my mind, for its own reasonsThurman Murman wrote:DOTC is a minor miracle at this stage in their career. Re: Running
I was humming a song before, thinking it was Running.
But nope, it was Supersonic.
Tough life.

I think if I ever caught myself humming Supersonic I'd want to go all Evil Dead Rise on my vocal chords with a cheese grater

I wish they would muster up the courage to make an album full of DOTCs.Thurman Murman wrote:DOTC is a minor miracle at this stage in their career. Cant imagine anything they make going forward touching it.Ms Harmless wrote: that's my ranking also if I'm honest, but I enjoy all four songs

Re: Running
there were actually Gigaton tracks I liked more than DOTC; I think the whole album was the late career masterpieceVal wrote:I wish they would muster up the courage to make an album full of DOTCs.Thurman Murman wrote:DOTC is a minor miracle at this stage in their career. 100% agree with both of these. Although I can't decide if I've enjoyed having Running stuck in my head yet.Thurman Murman wrote:DOTC is a minor miracle at this stage in their career. Re: Running
Come on, Gigaton is not a masterpiece.
We are talking about Never Destination, Take the long way, Alright, Buckle Up, SBWM... all of them are average songs at best. River Cross is ok (even if I don't see any greatness). Who Ever Said is really cool, Quick Escape rocks, DotC is the best, and 7 o'clock has very good verses, although I think the choruses could have been way better. Comes then goes is beautiful, and Retrograde is a very good song.
It takes a lot more to create a masterpiece.

Re: Running
Neither Gigaton nor Binaural is a masterpiece, but they both grew out of great and interesting creative ground, and that makes them more interesting than their base quality level.

That's a pretty insightful take, man...spot ontragabigzanda wrote:Gigaton is most certainly not a masterpiece…But it is the rare piece of creative output where I’m inclined to view it more favorably based on the effort rather than the final results
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I don’t know if I would call Gigaton a masterpiece but I do think, at least for me, it holds up with their earlier work. It is, to me, a logical extension (if we can use that phrase) to the sounds they sought to capture on Yield and S/T: not as successful as Yield but more successful than S/T. I could probably write pages on this alone, but I sort of see these three albums in similar lights, even if I have different preferences between the three of them.

Re: Running
Yeah Gigaton isnt a masterpiece but we've never seen a quality jump in Pearl Jam's releases like we did going from LB to Gigaton. So it was more a very pleasant surprise.
