Re: Cops Are The Worst
Here we are, unironically arguing about whether or not a white eight-year-old is ready to hear about the realities of white privilege, but not that a black eight-year-old lives with it every day. The system works.

its even more ironic that young african americans are taught at an early age of how to "act" around the po-po

These are hard discussions. I have 3 young kids. My 8 year old boy can understand. My 5 year old daughter will understand when she’s 8. But my 10 year old daughter... she’s sensitive and we should all know that kids need to understand this stuff, but it’s also a case by case basis.
And I do think this talk comes before the “peaceful protest vs rioting” talk. It’s hard to understand that one unless you understand the greater context first.

Re: Cops Are The Worst
In Australia before every sporting match, arts performance and school assembly/show there is an "Acknowledge of Country" ceremony/speech. We acknowledge the original land holders (Aboriginal tribe). Kids at 4-5 are exposed to this and then learn about how the British came to Australia and took the land. We also have a National Sorry Day where we as a nation apologise for past wrongs against our indigenous community.
This brings the conversation to the fore at a young age. With sensitivity these topics can be started at an early age.
Also, Australia is far from perfect and definitely a work in order.

Re: Cops Are The Worst
That's pretty common practice in Canada as well--not sure about sporting events, but the general practice of land acknowledgement. The idea that eight years old is unilaterally too young for a parent-to-child conversation about race is absurd. As Rob notes, there are obviously unique factors in every case, but I've personally taught eight-year-olds about slavery and oppression, so it certainly can be done. Going to go out on a limb and say that B knows his own kid better than anyone here.

Yeah who the fuck would criticize a conversation about life with their kids? 8 year old understand a lot. Just making them aware at an early age is a good thing

Really? I feel like B was generally defended. It's natural for some to think 8 is too young for heavy conversations, but I think we split in favor of "not too young" or "not too young with some exceptions."Superblood Wolfmoon wrote:Good job B. thats great that you're willing to keep trying. I hope your admins back you up.Iholdthepain wrote:Aside from a typical 8yo kid not understanding the cognitive and emotional impacts, as a teacher, you have to be really careful how far you go. I've taught CO history to 9/10yo kids for five years now, and each year I'd like to take some of the subject matter further, or interject some personal commentary about how events a, b, and c led to these effects on today's society. I've been ridiculed by parents for the slightest things, such as sharing an article about Greta Thunberg crossing the ocean to make it to the UN security council. It happens so much that I feel like I can't even stray from the scripted lessons out of fear of confrontation.Strat wrote:Perhaps having those conversations with children earlier than we have been would be a good fucking start
Basically, what I'm saying is that it's a slippery slope in so many ways as a teacher. Parents on either side of the political spectrum, who have these discussions with their kids, add their own influences to the conversation regardless of age. Parents are ultimately their kids #1 teacher, influencer, etc.
As long as we have such a hateful divide in this country, young kids won't really be able to comprehend the scope of the deep-seeded injustices. That's why they blindly pledge their allegiance to the good guy flag every day at school, and treat days of remembrance like it's party time, and that the big bad virus will have to take my party from my cold dead hands...
I hope some of that ramble made sense.

It is learned with rote memory without any meaning.

And when you do pay attention to it, it sounds like God just favors the U.S. Also the song "God bless America" as if we're the only country in the world. Stupid and conceited and instills a "we're better than you" attitude in little kids.elliseamos wrote:we've even dropped this in many districts.knee tunes wrote:I can't even believe this . I remember Mr. Vedder talking about "patriotism" one time at a show and the crowd went "wooo" . And he said, "the world isnt a fucking football game".
no wooos came after that.

I didn't mean to make it like I was arguing against talking to your own kids about relevant issues. I was just offering my perspective as a teacher who teaches the particular age group. It also depends on how it's approached...McParadigm wrote:Here we are, unironically arguing about whether or not a white eight-year-old is ready to hear about the realities of white privilege, but not that a black eight-year-old lives with it every day. ...kinda like the holocaust, you have to be careful how it's introduced. Many of these kids just don't have the emotional or intellectual capacity to understand the depth of it all.
From my perspective, it's a tightrope, and as someone who sees all walks of parenting philosophies and political leanings, ultimately 35-40% of our country will teach by example the racism, selfishness, xenophobia, and short-sighted views of things like 'hoaxes' and environmental conspiracy theories.
So yes! Keep trying!! We need all the young enlightened minds we can get in for any hope of a tangible future for our kids on this planet.

Yeah, a fair few years ago now our Prime Minister of the time finally apologised to the first nations people of Australia for past injustices. It was a great moment and the right thing to do.knee tunes wrote:I can't even believe this . That is so fucking awesome. Politicians had held off and advised against it for decades. I think the prevailing thought was "if you say sorry you are admitting guilt - there will be a flood of restitution/compensation claims and law suits etc etc". Well, that simply hasn't happened.
Don't get me wrong, the Government has certainly put aside large buckets of money to specifically support Indigenous Australians and their specific communities, and there is also specific money set aside to support redress activities about our Stolen Generation (which is a blight on us all), but the overall panic of a flood of legal action and claims and costs simply has not occurred.
And finally I can say that my Country did the right thing and apologised.
And this was done by a PM who (imo) was otherwise quite the tosser. He did good here though.
My feeling is that if you are solely pledging allegiance to the Flag of the US you are inciting unthinking patriotism to a symbol that may not actually represent you all. I mean do the First Nations people really as a whole feel the flag represents them? And if the flag is such an "all encompassing symbol" what's the deal with the Confederate flag? And of course pledging blind allegiance to the flag sort of disallows you to criticise or question things, does it not? I mean it is certainly a great way to bring out the "if you don't like it, fuck off" crowd.
But what the fuck do I know, hey?

You're absolutely correct in your evaluation of our country's blind allegiance. It is nothing more than rote memorization, as someone else stated. It's hypocricy of the highest order.
Been like this here since I was a kid, and beyond... "and Justice for all" is total bullshit!
I do like my job, though, so...
