I mean that is what typically happens, but then again that's usually them simply going to the strongest candidate/the obvious eventual winner. So are they going to that person because the establishment likes him? Is the establishment favorite the establishment favorite because they appealed to a larger swath of the party than the ones who dropped out so they were lots of people's 2nd choice? Is it because the establishment candidates (especially pre-Citizens United) were often much better funded than the regional/ideological/limited appeal candidates which becomes a bigger advantage the longer the fight goes on?

All of which is to say I think that the trend you mention is probably true, but as is the case with a lot of this primary stuff cause and effect is really tough to pinpoint.

once the democratic nominee is known, obama will probably stump like hell for that person and rally his voting bloc to ensure a Democratic victory

So this is really happening. The only way it doesn't is for everybody to drop besides Rubio and then he'll have a chance. But I'm with stip--I don't see Cruz dropping until it is way too late to matter.

I saw an interview this morning with Rubio where he actually hinted at that. He didn't say as much but basically said some consolidation needs to happen if he was going to beat Trump.

Based purely on public personas (I haven't gone in depth into policies), Trump is a total arsehole, but Rubio makes my skin crawl.

That Harry Potter email I posted the other day basically said that, too.

I think GOP leadership badly botched this election by not picking somebody, anybody, and lining up behind that singular candidate at least a month ago. But then again all of this seems like an almost natural result of the last 36 years of GOP strategy.

What are you gonna do when you've got a lot of egos in the room. Worst case scenario, they take it to the convention. Someone, non-Trump, will come out of that as the candidate. Then they'll surely lose to Hillary who's been softballing it with Bernie for months.

Then we'll have another Clinton in the White House and an Obama on the Supreme Court.

Whatever happens, no matter who gets elected, I'm not looking forward to it.
