And the movie kinda goes there too, but its more profound i guess. Not profound but even more psychological.

Yeah, it was an interesting book. I read it because I love True Detective. I found Galveston to have a lot of the same tones and settings, but the story was much quieter. I was sort of disappointed with it when I read it, but then the overall feeling of the book has stuck with me, so I think it was maybe better than I originally gave it credit for.

My god that movie. Holy fucking shit. So prescient, so complex, so biting, so funny, so badass. Even better the second time around. Like, nothing specific was triggering me emotionally (though there is definitely a scene or two that did that also), but I just couldn't help but get teary-eyed because of how perfect the movie was. Goddamn fucking crime that so few people have seen it.

Night Flight, the weekend counter-culture programming block on USA Network (which at the time was part-owned by Paramount) began regularly airing the film in 1984, where it found an audience. Off the positive reception of the airings, subdistributor Films Inc. licensed the film from Paramount, and it eventually made its way to the Art-House circuit. The film's theatrical run included engagements at Film Forum in New York City on Wednesday, March 6, 1985,[3] in Chicago in April 1985,[4] in Atlanta and Los Angeles in July 1985, and at the Theater of the Living Arts in Philadelphia from Friday, August 23 – Saturday, August 24, 1985.[5]

In 1998, the film showed at the Chicago Underground Film Festival at the prompting of filmmaker Sarah Jacobson. In 2001, Marc Edward Heuck, then a projectionist at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles, lobbied for its revival as a midnight show at the theatre, and the Nuart has screened the film multiple times since.[citation needed] It also played in 2005 at the Sydney Film Festival. In recent years, a private screening was held at the Yale University Department of Anthology in December 2006. The film enjoyed a two-day showing at Alamo Draft House - Ritz in Austin, Texas (December 1 and 8, 2008). The film aired on Turner Classic Movies as part of their Friday night feature, TCM Underground, on January 31, 2009. It was also shown as one of the films in the outdoor Top Down film series run by the Northwest Film Center in Portland, Oregon on August 6, 2009.[6] Most recently, it was screened at the premiere of the Rocksploitation midnight movie series on July 10, 2010 at the Bridge Theater in San Francisco.[7
