I cannot fathom this increasingly common late stage Trump era flippancy. Degrees and severity matter. “The president often rambles or waxes nonsensical” is no reason to shrug when he degenerates into raw, puréed gibberish.

I see we’re back to crushing on Robert E Lee, this morning.

I like that someone's job is to make these graphics for when his approval rating ticks up to 50% in one poll.

He isn’t really “ticking up” to 50 in one poll. It’s always the same poll: Rasmussen.

Rasmussen has had him at around 50% approval, or about 8-11 points higher than every other pollster, forever. They also misguessed Republican popularity in the midterms by...wait for it....9-10 points (by far the worst of any pollster group tracking opinion polling during that time). But every so often CNN or The New York Times or whoever else may be watching decides to run a headline on “new poll shows Trump at 50%!” I assume that headline is the only outcome Rasmussen really values, since their margin of right-leaning inaccuracy began growing even before 2016 and their founder left to go be a Republican pundit.

Not surprised by this, as the impacts of the tariff fights have been brutal in the Plains, but it’s still noteworthy. I expect tariff opposition to become a bigger and bigger campaign issue for Plains state Republicans, the closer we get to election time.

Whoever could have imagined that insulating some industries from competition, raising taxes on consumers (low-income most of all), and limiting Americans' ability to choose how to spend their money could go so wrong?
