I'm just realising now that lyrically, I don't think the metaphor of the "Sirens" is being carried through. It's just a throwaway line that sounds nice. That's disappointing; they could've made it stranger, or at least written more imagery to do with sounds, signals, the stuff portrayed by the artwork. But it's like the sirens idea is thrown off on the intro and then it's just a standard love song.

I'm viewing it more as the Siren from Greek mythology. Ed is alone in a hotel room, away from his wife and the Sirens calling him are the ladies he may have met on the road when he was young and single (after Beth). But he has changed and is not that man anymore. He is happy with his relationship and doesn't want to make a mistake. So allthough he hears them, and he still has the fear of giving in, he's going to stay true to his woman.

In every way but lyrically, this song has more in common with other artists than it does with 1991-2006 Pearl Jam.

What throws me so much is...I have no more reaction to it than I do to the stuff that plays over the intercom at my dentist's office. I don't hate it, I don't dislike it, I don't enjoy it....I don't feel anything.

It's not a quality comparison. It's a stylistic similarity that's starting to really swell up underneath their sound.

Whatever quality it was that drew me personally to Pearl Jam...this is what they sound like with that particular quality completely removed. It's the same guys playing the song, but there's none of what made their music matter to me left. So I guess I don't have an opinion on this song. I'm not sure I ever will.

I think that, together, these sum up where I'm at with this band.

My interest in Pearl Jam was never about the sound of a voice or the tone of a guitar solo. There was something else there, and it's just not anymore.

This song is to Pearl Jam what After the Fire is to Quadrophenia.



Addendum caveat that I'm not talking about the quality of the song. Whatever they're doing on this song, they're doing it well. But if that was the type of doing I wanted done, I'd have a very different record collection right now than the one that I have. It just doesn't contain any of the qualities that causes a piece of music to move me in any way.

This album will definitely be a mishmash of styles. I'm thinking that could be a great thing in the end.

One thing I'll say about all this is that we haven't had a PJ album like this before, for better or worse.

I think the sirens are death btw. Seems to a reccuring theme in eddies lyrics lately. Fear of dying.

But yeah, this has grown on me substantially in the last hour.
