Also, I'm feeling a bit of an R.E.M. vibe (Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, Imitation of Life, All the Way to Reno). I say to the complainers, R.E.M., I think will always be thought of as one of the greatest things to come to rock music, and automatic for the people (my personal favorite) and some of their other songs have cheese but they're still great. I can hear the people on this forum bitching about how Stipe does an Elvis impression in that song, good grief.

If you take away the production, cheesy solo and prominent piano, I don't really see it as any different than a song like Betterman. That said..I certainly can't see young Ed singing it. But I have zero problem hearing almost 50 Ed doing this.

Its only the solo I can't get on board with here.

Yeah, I hear an Automatic vibe here as well.

Only thing saving this from top40 commercial pop is eds vocals. His voice lacks polish normal associated with pop radio. This is a good thing
