It’s pretty much ridiculous negotiating with Putin anyway. He and his regime has broken every agreement they ever had, and in March 2022 he was still trying to take Kyiv.

By the end of March, the drive to Kiev was clearly done and about to return back to Belarus. I suggest that their negotiation position has not been significantly improved since then. I have no idea what terms Russia would agree to now, but if it's not much off from what they would have agreed to then, but there's many thousands of casualties that could have been avoided.

Russia’s demands are completely outlandish, like denazifying Ukraine (ridiculous claim, which is not true that Ukraine is run by nazis), that Ukraine has done evil crimes against their own people, and on and on and on. Russia under Putin also breaks every deal it makes, especially with Ukraine.

It’s kind of crazy when an evil regime invades your country, kills and rapes thousands, steals a large part of your land, has broken every agreement ever made, and has crazy accusations about you, that you are supposed to negotiate with them.

obv Ukraine shouldn't have just acquiesced to handing over 20% of their land mass to Russia without a fight

it's unfortunate that they weren't armed enough to make their own adequate defense, and that the west slow-rolled it's support for them bc they were afraid of Putin's escalation

hopefully they can form at least some tacit agreement that gets peace and security for the parts of Ukraine that are still in Ukraine's hands

As Kyiv fights a bloody war with Moscow, a new Gallup public opinion poll gives a striking look inside what ordinary Ukrainians think about their country’s future. VOA talked to leading experts to help unpack the findings.

“Given everything that’s happening, paying attention to what’s going on in Ukraine daily is more important now than it was before,” Julie Ray, Gallup’s managing editor for world news, told VOA.

Gallup is an independent global research organization based in Washington that is best known for its public opinion surveys.

What does ‘winning’ look like?

Nearly every Ukrainian agrees that winning the war means regaining all the land that Russia has conquered from their country since 2014, when the Crimean Peninsula was annexed by Moscow, the Gallup survey found.

While most Ukrainians support fighting until the war is won, that majority is shrinking. Last year it was 70%, and this year it is 60%.

“Fatigue is building up,” said Sergey Radchenko, a scholar of Soviet history at Johns Hopkins.

A growing number of Ukrainians are now hoping Kyiv can negotiate an end to the conflict. That sentiment, Ray said, is especially strong near the front lines in the nation’s south and east, where the toll of war is worst.

One in two Ukrainians reported in Gallup’s survey that they struggle to afford food and shelter. Experts say that Russia wants to see increasing disillusionment in Ukraine as the war drags on.

“That’s why [Russian President Vladimir] Putin has pursued this strategy of targeting infrastructure, power plants and so on,” Radchenko said. “He wants to exhaust the Ukrainian public.”

This winter, Putin could make further headway.

“There are going to be difficult conditions,” said Joseph Nye, a former dean of Harvard Kennedy School. “As the Russians concentrate on destroying infrastructure, people are going to go cold and hungry. That’s probably going to have some effect on how Ukrainians view the war.”

Two very dfferent conflicts.

Don’t want to hijack the Ukraine thread with Israel/Palestine. But it’s iimportant to note that the support for a two state solution is especially low amongst Palestinians. They are not another nation, they are a people that primarily wants to live in all of what is now considered Israel/Palestine. Some want peace, some want war, some want democracy, some want islamic rule. They as a people should not be treated as a lesser people, and should be given a chance to live in peace, like the other two million muslims (of Palestinian origin) living in Israel. Either as part of a one state or two state solution. However, Hamas are terrorists, no matter what Israel have done. Israel on their side have abused the Palestinian people for decades, and have used way too much force in its response in Gaza.

Ukraine was a peaceful democracy that was invaded by its more powerful neighbour. Next to no Ukrainians want their country/town/property to become a part of Russia. Any allegations put forward by Russia were lies.
