S/T feels so calculated and desperate to be liked. The way it struts around and puffs its chest always felt off-putting to me.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Gigaton is not better than ST and that is that!
I like about half of the songs on their own, and I don’t dislike any of them. But like Binaural, the album is less than the sum of its parts.

Seems like a pretty lazy song. Olé rehashed and beefed up.

Re: Running
I don't think I'd call Gigaton a masterpiece, but it was something I could say was great without qualification (i.e. I didn't have to include a caveat like 'it's good for a 30-year old band'). It was just good on its own merits and in the context of the band's career, and it was definitely a far better record than I was expecting them to be able to make after their fallow period.
I don't think PJ needs to, or should be held to a standard of, needing to equal their best records to make another worthy album for the catalog. They don't need to be as good as Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, etc., but you just want the new album to be hanging out in the same neighborhood, so to speak. It may also be why my expectations were slightly elevated for Dark Matter; I think they're capable of more than just putting out a record with 2-3 more songs that can work its way into a PJ playlist.

I don't need for any "album" to achieve some commendable-international-acclaim-academy-award-Nobel-peace-prize heights, I just want PEARL JAM SONGS TO BE GREAT FUCKING ROCK SONGS that I'm gonna love and replay the shit out of.digster wrote:I don't think I'd call Gigaton a masterpiece, but it was something I could say was great without qualification (i.e. I didn't have to include a caveat like 'it's good for a 30-year old band'). we're all just chasing that emotional high their music gave us when we were in our prime development. That is that.

I said "late-career masterpiece", which is not the same as Vitalogy, an all-time masterpieceDeeDee wrote:Come on, Gigaton is not a masterpiece.
for me, every song on Gigaton is good to great; it's the only PRAMG album I can always play from beginning to end
all that considered, I refuse to "come on"

Re: Running
literally all I've ever needed from any band (including Pearl Jam) is albums with no skips; that's my only criteria for "great album" (or "masterpiece" when I'm feeling hyperbolic); for me, PJ has 8 of those, 9 at a push; the conditional 9th is S/T, the definite 8th is Gigaton, and the first seven are... the first seven, up to and including Riot Act

Re: Running
In addition to having different opinions about any given piece of art, every individual interprets the word “masterpiece” in a different way.
Regardless of the dictionary definition, some people see masterpiece as a way to describe a creative or technical highwater mark (an artist’s master piece). Others assign it to most any work that feels exemplary. Still others would argue that very few works exist worthy of the term.
So it’s all subjective. Perhaps the only objective fact is that neither Gigaton nor Binaural is a masterpiece, but they both grew out of great and interesting creative ground, and that makes them more interesting than their base quality level.
