Oh, I read that as though the last couple of albums have been their "doing something different" (in this case, they're experimenting with being terrible) phase and that everybody is still keen to continue down that road next time around.

who, other than PJ message board attendees, are out there condoning or encouraging PJ to stay the course of their last few albums? how is an intervention not occurring after each of these? PJ give these interviews where they talk about various current events and they sound coherent and in touch with reality and then all the sudden when the subject of their studio work comes up its like they live in some M Night Shyamalan tinkerbell fairy village where they are surrounded by people who are convinced that this work product is fantastic ... who the fuck is telling them this dog shit is OK? these albums don't stand the test of one month within their release date. other than lonely drips that are already obsessed with PJ, these albums impress no one

No one, that's the thing. Surround yourself with yes-men and things go to shit. It sounds like BoB is the closest thing to someone who speaks his mind around them, but it's just his modern taste doesn't suit most of us and what we think the band is capable of.

Some of the hits off of the last two albums are now the most successful streaming tracks by this band since Yield's top performing moments, which themselves are above quite a few of the album tracks from the "glory days." They are pure nostalgia fodder, comfortable to casual music listeners and unthreatening to the myriad of 40 somethings who used to be a lot more dangerous and curious than they are now. They are exactly what all those 67-73 debuting pop champions delivered in the 1980's. They are the new Pearl Jam. They are what your kids will hear while they wait for the dentist. They are ticket-selling non-event safe pop tracks.

I take your point but nobody's kids are gonna be listening to Mind Your Manners whilst getting a cavity filled. (Unless I finally realize my dream of becoming a dentist with his own super cool playlists late in life.)

I just like to pretend that "Riot Act" was their last album and the 2006 tour was their farewell tour. It's much better that way.

This is those allegedly positive reviews of their recent records paraphrased essentially. Safe late career records from a band the press (and the general public) has really low expectations for.
I think those same songs could actually sound better if produced in a standard pop manner with session musicians and a producer with some good taste. The compositions as they end up on the records sound as if they happened around a negotiating table rather than a recording studio by people who actually had a clue about what works for a song and what doesn't, beyond their individual parts that is.
