Honestly, I doubt that the general audiences will care if it's a Jedi-centric movie. It's Star Wars. The brand itself will sell the movie.

How do you sell something that you want to call Star Wars but all the footage you have and the film you have clearly isn't Star Wars as it's understood?

I mean, there's AT-AT's, and Tie fighters, and a Death Star, and Stormtroopers, and Deystroyers, and Rebels, so it still feels like star wars to me

All negative images and devices. Empire is the bad guy. No identifiable familiar good guy. Sounds ridiculous but people need somebody familiar and want to like something they're familiar with. Tom cruise Morgan freeman etc have a career based just on this simple premise.

But you didn't say that in your original post. You just said "star wars" and everything I listed is easily identifiable as star wars

You think anything that's been presented to the public so far speaks to them as Star Wars? Other than some storm troopers and a few walkers and a logo. Telling them it's a Star Wars story?

I know we live in a trump era where people will buy anything but people this past year or two are generally a bit more discerning about their disposable income when it comes to entertainment. Look at the batman v superman or ghostbuster effect. They didn't go see it cos it was marketed badly. This to date has been marketed poorly. Even to its target market.

This is the most fascinating perspective I've seen regarding this movie. And you're not alone in feeling this way. So don't think I'm calling you out or coming down on you or anything. I just really don't get the psychology of it. But obviously a ton of people feel this way.

When Disney has a release later this summer/early fall that they're "worried about" they'll throw an extended Rogue One trailer on the front of it as a way to sucker people into the theaters to spend money on that property.

Just trying to keep my fandom in check. Reading the clinical and sometimes cold views on this and the marketing of it to date, has brought up some interesting stuff. Far more interesting than the blind fanboism and speculation.

My take on it and the reluctance you're seeing from fans, is that we all have varying degrees of ownership over what we think is Star Wars. Hardcore fans more so. And there's a need to protect in that ownership. We dont like new things being bolted on to our beloved story, especially given last time it happened it resulted in the prequels. It's an understandable sense of ownership.

R1 is a harder sell to large swathes of the hardcore fan base than it is the general public, the more intense of these already refusing to acknowledge its existence as part of the story and refusing to see it. They'll all come round. I'm skeptical too but I know I'll go and probably love it. This is where the sense of entitlement comes in. That's the result of the age we live in and the Internet allowing us to have everything, now.

But my overall point was, Disney are really making a mess of selling it, on all fronts. Again, especially in a summer were my devoid of big headline grabbing, blockbusters. There haven't been any. They've missed a huge trick. Maybe they're trying to market it differently than FA?

dime's the only fan I've ever met that isn't excited about Rogue One.

I am excited but I wish they'd have gotten the new trilogy out first and then do the standalones afterwards, gives a breathing space for the inevitable follow up trilogy.

Not convinced inserting the standalones into the run of an ongoing trilogy was a good idea. And just pissed I have to wait 2 years where we wouldn't have had to if they werent there

I just watched this again, and I get really annoyed at the end when Vader comes on and the crowd gets all fanboy.

pretty surprised vinyl guy's looking forward to this movie considering the lead is female
