those are two of my favorite songs, and on my first two listens I'm not feeling this one.

This is about something real. And this totally adds to the conceptual feel of the album as a whole.

Wishlist is retarded lyrically. But, for example, my wife loves Wishlist and pretty much just tolerates Pearl Jam. Wishlist was relatively popular. This will be similar to that in some ways. That's my point, nothing more. Also, I think this is a much better song than Wishlist because it is.

P.S. Whoever said this was Pink Floyd'ish is crazy.

wishlist is one of the strongest pieces of writing in the catalog, lyrically.

I'm not sure I agree with this, since it doesn't seem to account for something that is cheesy but still genuinely moving. Maybe what you describe is one end of a cheese continuum.

I think Pearl Jam is one of those bands that you either buy into or not. There's always been a sincere and earnestness that either people have loved or makes some uncomfortable. There's a certain hokiness you buy into, I've felt, since Ten. The Nirvana/Sonic Youth side of the spectrum hated Ten cause they liked the whole "detached cool" thing. That hokiness is something very American, and which resonates in a very middle-American way. It's something that alot of people eat up but doesn't necessarily stand up well to critical review (the kind that happens in journalism and now message boards).

It could've done with a thick wall of guitars, for sure. Some Binaural, Light Years-esque guitars would've really helped it.
