Very good performance.

His timing was fucking all over the place, and his low register singing style continues to be an abomination, but his high range belting continues to serve him decently. That isn't enough to make these not terribly boring, but oh well.

really nice to see one of those again. i learned to drum from watching the touring band matt cam.

Though I don't agree with your opinion on these being boring (I was stoked when I heard these), his timing being off (I think he intentionally changes it for older songs which may be irritating for some) or his lower register (I think he sounds very resonant and rich), it's still nice to see a critique that mentions what exactly was not likable about the performance for you.

It seems to me that most are just dissing him because it's what they do best. Probably why I only lurk around now, that too occasionally. Too much hate and negativity here for the guy who's the primary reason I fell in love with this band and is still the primary reason I look forward to their new material.

Pearl Jam songs just don't really strike me as "piano transferable." Especially not if Chris Martin's the guy playing the piano, with his leaden, syrupy, "plod-plod" playing style.

Yes. Saying Ed doesn't have it like he used to is incredibly lazy. Every rock singer in the history of the world at age 51 doesn't sound as good as they did at age 25 or 30. It's an exceedingly obvious point to make. But that doesn't stop people from making it here ad infinitum.

Is his phrasing annoying sometimes? Sure. But his performance of Nothingman in the year of our Lord 2016 is pretty damn impressive, all things considered.

I don't think Eddie has the worst voice, but to be honest I don't really understand why his voice has suffered as he aged more than most rock singers. It seems often as singers age they may lose sheer power or range but attain a bit of grit and gravity that comes with a roughening of their voice. If anything, the opposite's happened with Ed; his voice sounds pinched and weakened. I would suppose the drinks, smokes and touring contributed, but plenty of singers drink and smoke, and PJ hasn't toured THAT much in comparison to their contemporaries.

It's not something I really dock him for, cause every voice ages differently, but Ed's somewhat unique at least among singers I've listened to for a long period of time in terms of how age, time and experience have affected his voice.

The guy had shredded his voice for years singing like that. Listen to some of the shit he did. Blood, DTE and countless others.

Certainly, but I mean, you look at guys like Springsteen, Thom Yorke, Cornell, Michael Stipe, and quite a few others; they've all put in their time on stage and what happened to Ed's voice didn't really happen. I'm not really saying Ed's voice now is worse than those voices, it's just interesting how his voice matured. After blowing his vocal chords out on Evolution all those years, you'd think you'd hear the kind of sandpaper and gravel that showed up in Springsteen's voice as the decades wore on, but Ed's voice has kind of gone in the opposite direction.

I would say Cornell is the only one of those who really push it as a young singer and he is still in his prime nowadays.

I always cite Robert Plant as an example in these discussions.

The guy screamed like a banshee from 1968-1972.

Then...1973 tour, voice go poof.

From then on, he became a "crooner". That's just the way it goes.
