Oh, tree, they'll tell you that you don't need to go through all the hassle with the kids. If you just start using the other name for the kids it's legal and that's good enough. But don't listen. It's true enough but it can also be annoying when they grow up and try to renew an expired passport or whatever. Tracing the line from Jack Smith on the birth certificate to Jack Jones on the drivers license is easier when you have that nice clean name change form from when they were kids. Don't have to attest to anything or go to a notary public or show up in person and blah blah blah. Just get it on paper for them now the same way you do for yourself.
My sister is dealing with this bologna right now and my mom feels a little guilty over it

Yeah, I think you can change your name just by starting to use a different name. But don't do it! Fill out whatever paperwork your state recommends.
