Go digging. Find new music yourselves. I'm sure for $30 a month you all could find way more interesting records if you went out and took some chances. Get out there and find stuff. It seems lazy to me. You know how many Ben Webster LPs I find just sitting in dollar bins? It feels columbia house for the uber generation.

So is Donuts the record they're feeding you this month? It's shame that it's lost on you guys. The record was made on his deathbed with just a stack of records and a sampler. You need time with it to really get it. And I'm definitely not one of those "J Dilla Changed My Life Types" but fuck its an amazing piece of art from someone who really pushed the limits of his craft.

I lost my copy a few years ago so if someone wants to sell it, shoot me a message.

Well, its not like this is the only way we are getting music. I still spend 90% of my day scouring the internet for new music to listen to and going to record stores. Also, with a fairly new collection (been only collecting for a year) im still spending my money on getting a lot of my all time favorite records. I still dont have all of Ryan Adams, Wilco, Tom Waits etc...in my collection yet.

Well that changes EVERYTHING! No one told me this was art made on a deathbed with only stacks of records and sampler! If I'd known that, of course, I would have automatically realized it was amazing art and a record worthy of having in my collection!

i do that, too, friend. some recent 'digging' pickups include the chambers brothers, a michael kamen album from 1972, an ornette coleman reissue, marc ribot trio,...

i *choose* to let my $30 go to a record i might not otherwise buy and dictated by an outside source. i understand there is a risk of getting records i hate. i'm ok with that. if it happens a lot, then i'll stop paying them my $30.

I was going to chime in about the $30 record club thing being kind of a waste but didn't want to fuel the negative verb stereotype.

There are tons of great affordable singles clubs and subscription series out there, almost always with exclusive material. Matador's last year was awesome and had titles from Steve Gunn, Cain Nugent, and Tony Molina. This year Joyful Noise[ (a midwest independent) has a flexi series that's loaded with talent and interesting bands. I'm just grossed out by the idea of shelling out over $350 a year for a mystery record packaged with silly extras. What am I gonna do with a fucking cocktail recipe? But really for me I see the whole thing a corporate, venture capitalist thing looking to make a buck off the "vinyl" resurgence.

As for Donuts, again sucks that it's lost on you. And I was only trying to provide some context to the record. It's not an easy album to "get" and it really does reveal itself to you in time. If you let it. It was a pioneer producer's final statement to the world and as such it's got some heft. And if you really delve into it and find the samples he used and understand how he flipped them and made them his own, Dilla's genius will become apparent.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, thank the great satan you have your Decemberists LPs, right?

I dont partake :\. Shockingly it has no affect on me.

Also, sometimes a good story really helps bring the music to a new level. I do look forward to listening to it even though im generally not a hip hop guy.

I think youre overreacting on SNC. As the vinyl 'fad' continues to mount steam we will see more hollow attempts from those looking to cash in. Thats certainly what I view this particular vinyl me thing as. I read through the list of albums they have issued...it reeked of something some dude in a tie goggle searched from his office.
