Re: HALL OF FAME!!!!!!
Good post.
However, it reminded me of something I recently read. Can't quite remember where it was (which probably doesn't strengthen this argument). But someone who had knowledge of the scene at the time, wrote that Ed was the lucky one. That Stone, Mike and Jeff could have picked any talented vocalist, and they would have made it huge. Think of Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana. The music for Ten was nearly all written already.
Now clearly Ed was an amazing catch and an incredible vocalist, but who really knows what would have happened to him? The rest of the guys were already fairly established musicians with first one, and then another record deal. Even if they sold a third of the albums that Pearl Jam did, it would be an incredible success.

More than anything I think the Dave A. scenario just highlights how dumb and arbitrary the RRHOF's selection process is. All the drummers should have been inducted. But it's not the band's award to give, nor is it their obligation to right the Hall's wrongs. I understand sympathizing with Dave but I also think it's silly that it should be incumbent upon a person to immediately go back and reconcile all the broken relationships of his past just because he's getting an award. I don't disagree that a proper invitation and an offer to compensate the cost of his ticket would have been a classy move but I don't feel like it's my place to think any less of the band for not springing into action; human relationships are complicated and we really have no more than the shallowest awareness of what went on between these people.

Re: HALL OF FAME!!!!!!
Part of the reason PJ had such success so early on, and basically walked into a major label deal, was due to the success of Mother Love Bone. I wasn't too familiar with the history of that band until I looked into it, but they were signed to a major label and were about to hit the big time prior to Wood's death. It's the cred and relationships they established that kind of led to PJ's early success. Pearl Jam had an almost unbelievably charmed origin; very few rock bands like that walk into a major label record deal. On the back of MLB's success, PJ didn't really have to spend years in the trenches (which ironically I think contributed to some of Ed's uncomfortableness with the fame the band received).Anders wrote:Good post.

Re: HALL OF FAME!!!!!!
True. As the book PJ20 shows as well, the main two people at Polygram that had signed Mother Love Bone, had moved on to Epic. Stone and Jeff arranged to be released from the Polygram deal, never telling them of being in the process of making a new record and having a talented new vocalist. Instead they said they had nothing going on, and just wanted their release. Later the same day, they signed with Epic, which had worked for some time to sign Stone and Jeff for a new project. This was done the week after Ed left Seattle in October 90, but the process with Epic had started before they had even heard Ed sing (impossible to tell if they had heard him when the contract was signed).digster wrote:Part of the reason PJ had such success so early on, and basically walked into a major label deal, was due to the success of Mother Love Bone. the jamily should have been included, it is our love and support and synchronised hand movements at shows that propels this band to greater heights
