Nolan’s sound mixing is infamous in the home theater enthusiast world. He hates dynamic sound design.

He also hates good picture quality. He is like the only person alive who creates release prints/files from interpostives instead of negatives, meaning you lose tons of fine detail. It’s idiotic. Again, a great way to waste 70mm.

it's funny that i can see more detail on a closeup on a digitally shot tv show than in Dunkirk. And thanks for this post verm, some new concepts for me in there.

Yeah, see, that is crazy. 70mm film holds absurd amounts of fine detail. Like, REALLY absurd amounts. This should never, ever happen unless someone massively fucks up the workflow. Like Nolan does on every movie he makes.

All technical stuff aside, i didn't really care about anyone in the movie, other than Mark Rylance. That was the biggest failure.

I did not like Dunkirk. My suspension-of-disbelief-engine's fuel is captivating characters. I couldn't stop yawning.

Man, I tried to watch Sunset Boulevard last night but I just couldn't hang. The dialogue and acting were just so stiff and hammy. I wish I could chalk that up to the era, but films like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, It's a Wonderful Life, Seven Samurai, and the entire Alfred Hitchcock filmography render that defense false.

I could not enjoy this movie. Maybe I'll try again sometime.

Loved, loved, loved Murder on the Orient Express. Beautifully atmospheric, and holy shit, I have never noticed how great of an actor Kenneth Branagh is before. He is AMAZING in this. I have seen other adaptations of this story before, but this blew those away, and a lot of it is because of how he brings Poirot to life.

I think the most important thing mentioned is this:

The 65mm format worked in concert with film grammar that featured fewer cuts. Zambarloukos estimates the film has an average of 150 edits per reel, a fraction of what’s considered normal in current cinema.

You can really feel this in the way the film breathes; it's like it's ripped from another era. It's still, patient, and controlled - much like Poirot himself. I found it very refreshing. What a wonderful movie.

Completely agree, but the comedy was a bit much for me. That's not to say I didn't like it, it's just that it was not in line with the rest of the movie since it was funny and almost slapstick at the beginning and then serious with some bits of comedy here and there for the rest. Loved how it looked, it was just a gorgeous film. I think the only performance I had issue with was the count. He seemed to be a parody of something, the way he was so stilted at times. I guess I'd say it was like he was a wind-up doll and only did things when set loose.

And there's a sequel coming? That's refreshing, seeing a movie series that isn't a typical example of it.

The Naked Jungle. Like every Charlton Heston movie he's an insufferable asshole who by the end becomes a barely tolerable asshole.
