To me free speech is not when you see something good and then you purposefully write bad. To me that’s very dangerous speech and you become angry at it. But that’s not free speech.

It’s the naked racism of the tweet that blows my mind. Three of the four people he’s referring to were born in the United States. The other came here at 10. But they’re “different” looking so it’s “go back to your own country and fix THAT if you’re so smart.”

How is this the "new" normal after eight years of birtherism though? I think these are probably the most racist things said by a president since Nixon, though I'd have to do a deep dive of Reagan to be sure. But Obama has been coded as a foreign Muslim terrorist by a not insignificant strand of the right since before he entered office. Think of McCain on the campaign trail where he countered a racist remark with something like, "he's not a Muslim, he's a good person." So while I do think these tweets are heinous and barefaced, I'm wary of treating them as discontinuous with right-wing thought in America.
