This.
STBC is by far my least favorite song on Vitalogy, so much so it is the only track I skip. Just a twenty something screaming about fucking records. I don't find MYM bland at all. It's not changing the world but the performance is tight and well executed. Ed sounds good and staying in areas he should and I love the lyrics. I'm not versed in too much 80s punk so I could care less if it is "neutered". The bridge is fantastic.
Thejambi, I served with Spin The Black Circle. I knew Spin The Black Circle. Spin The Black Circle was a friend of mine. MYM, you're no Spin The Black Circle.
I love you so much.

I've been thinking "Comatose" meets "Bridge Burning" by the Foo Fighters.

On a slight side-note I do have to say that the timing of the Constitutional Hall release was perfect in wetting my appetite for this.
"I really enjoy sandwiches but the other guys are so good at making sandwiches that I don't make them. Now I make sandwiches."

And it's got a real crunchy, almost metal sound on the front. Is 'punk' the best way to describe it?

The only reason I compared it to STBC besides being up tempo, the chord changes sound very similar during the verses to STBC.

So well done. That Lloyd Bentsen quote stands as both mine and my father's favorite moment in American political history.

I'm not listening with a trained musical ear, mind you. And I'm not holding either of them up against other songs of the same/similar genre. I'm looking at each of them in a vacuum. Lyrically, the subject matter is more interesting to me in MYM. I love how much is happening in the song. It moves and shifts it very appealing ways, I think. I love the way Ed sounds. The guitar interplay is rubbing me the right way, even if it's bland to some.

STBC is screechy and harder to listen to. It's less polished, sure, but it's also based on, what I think is, a pretty dipshit metaphor. I like the vocal melody, the vocal layering, and the call and response of MYM better than the over-earnest, shove that Grammy up your ass, tongue in cheek howl Ed's rocking in STBC. And STBC circle dissolves to noise pretty quickly. They did this sort of thing a few times before STBC and did it better in my opinion.

Now, when I'm in the mood for it, or when I'm listening to Vitalogy front to back, it's a juicy, well timed slice of power-punk rock that hits my gut and keeps running before I have time to ID the bastard. Which is awesome. As I said, it's grown on me quite a bit. MYM is still too new to call "better than STBC." But I like my first impression better. MYM is a more listenable song. Which maybe means it's too easy. Which maybe means it's not as good. I don't know. But I fucking love it.
I love it too! I mean love STBC too but as it was said its a song about records...this subject matter has weight to me. Maybe cause I'm older and more in tune with the world and its issues. But its catchy...raw...roaring...and its all over the place in a good way. The layering is something I really missed from Backspacer. It was there but all the layers felt separate to me. They didn't bend and fold over eachother. The layers here compliment each other. And the call outs at the end...not something I ever imagined the guys doing well, but I love it. Lyrically, composition wise and it ignites a fire inside me that I haven't felt In a long time listening to ANY music.... ZOMG!!! they were right....THIS SHIT IS HOT FIRE!!! ®

It's OOOOKay!! Sometimes you'll find yourself...having to put allll yoooour faith, in noooooo faa-a-aith!! Mine is mine and yours won't take its place, now make your getaway-HEY!

I don't know...the verses feel pretty straight up punk, or at least a band like X or Dead Kennedys to me personally (I'll admit I'm not super well-versed). I think a big part of it is that sarcastic, sneering tone Eddie has in the verses, as well as the end.

Maybe its pj taking something back in exchange for metallica ripping off why go on their last album

I've got an unfortunate feeling
i've been beaten down
i feel i don't believe and now the truth is comin' out
what they take is more than a vow
they've taken your innocence and then they go around and burn and violate it

i'm only saying
mind your manners

i caught myself believing
that i needed god
and if it's out there somewhere
we sure could use it now

trying my patience
my patience's trying
this world don't know no better
and it makes me wanna cry

i'm only saying
mind your manners
someone say it

self-realized and metaphysically redeemed
may not live another life
may not solve a mystery
right around the corner
could be bigger than ourselves
we could will it to the sky
or we could something else

ya know, no one's sayin'
mind your manners
always praying

self-realized and metaphysically redeemed
may not live another life
may not solve a mystery
right around the corner
could be bigger than ourselves
we could will it to the sky
or we could something else

go to heaven
that's swell
how do you like it
living in hell

go to heaven
that's swell
how do you like it
living in hell

go to heaven
that's swell
how do you like it
living in hell

living in hell
Here's another interpretation from the Pit:

I’ve got an unfortunate feeling…
I’ve been beaten down…
I feel left unbelieving and the truth needs coming out

What they’ll take is…
More than a vow…
They’ve taken young innocents and then they throw ‘em on a burning pile

All along they’re saying…
Mind your Manners!

I caught myself believing..
That I needed God …
And if He’s out there somewhere we sure could use him now..

Trying my patience..
My patience tried…
This world’s got nothing left in it and it and make me want to cry

All along they’re saying..
Mind your Manners!
So they say!

Self-realized and metaphysically redeemed…
May not live another life..
May not solve our mysteries…
Right around the corner..
Could be bigger than ourselves..
We could will it to the sky..
Or we could something else..

All along they’re saying..
Mind your Manners!
Always praying!

Self-realized and metaphysically redeemed…
May not live another life..
May not solve our mysteries…
Right around the corner..
Could be bigger than ourselves..
We could will it to the sky..
Or we could something else..

Go to Heaven!
That’s swell!
How do you like it-- living in Hell?

Feeling the same.

I wish the lighter parts of MYM were a little more interesting (think poor girl) or a little darker.
