i have a buddy who got into a severe biking accident about a year ago and is still pretty messed up. he can walk, but needs a cane to do so. and he can drive. he (rightfully) has a handicap placard in his car. his daughter plays soccer with my daughter. they practice at a park that has limited parking, and the cars can line up pretty deep (the girls can still see us in line though, and know to walk to the cars).

yesterday i decided to park further down and walk to the field to meet my girl. there was a line of cars ready to pick up. i get close, and i pass right by the one space immediately in front of the field that is reserved for "accessible parking" (i.e., a handicap space). a car was parking there, and it was my buddy who was picking up his girl. he was waiting for her to come to the car. note: he never got out of his car; his girl ran to the car and got in instead.

i kind of have a problem with this. should i have a problem with this?

because the purpose of having a placard is to make it easier to walk to and from the place to where you drove. he wasn't using it for that purpose. he was just using it to park close so his daughter didn't have walk as far. and he was monopolizing the spot so it couldn't be used by someone who could have legitimately needed it.

i think he was abusing his privileges.
