Unless you are in the room you have no idea who wrote what and even people in the room disagree. Producers have written entire albums and got no credit and some just hit record and get writing credits. Either the people in the band are honest or it was negotiated before they recorded. Mutt Lange won't work with you unless he gets a writing credit. Steve Albini would rather die.

The particular type of Soundgarden-ness in this song is what will probably always keep it at just "pretty good" for me. I like, but never loved, Soundgarden, and the stuff I do love isn't this muscled-up (or muscled-up like Rhinosaur, as was just mentioned).

Fell on Black Days, The Day I Tried to Live, Blow Up the Outside World...those are songs I love.

same - i liked soundgarden and get the appeal but they were easily at the bottom of the seattle bands for me. I could put together one killer cd of my favorites but thats about it.

the SG elements are what interest me least about this song.

This integrity argument is baffling.

They've been playing arenas since 1992 and worked really hard to straddle the thin line of being an arena rock band with dignity.
They've taken bands on tour that never would've been given the chance otherwise, kept prices below market average for decades, willingly shed fans in the name of artistic integrity while maintaining arena status, put their money where their mouth is when it comes to carbon neutrality and charitable endeavours...On and on and on...

I'd say their credibility is beyond reproach

I am the rare long-time/major PJ fan who disagrees with them on nearly every political issue they espouse but I actually have respect for the sincerity and consistency of their beliefs over the years.

The only time I felt they got off track was the 2009/Backspacer era and their exclusive arrangement with the Target corp. Playing an exclusive shareholder gig was pretty hypocritical for a band that a few years early wouldn’t shut up about “corporations” and put a graphic of the American flag in their newsletter with corporate logos replacing the stars (was the Target logo on there? I’d have to check. Ha!)

My political views have me neutral on corporations (hate big government more) but I still found it inconsistent and lame of them jump in bed with Target.

yeah - I mean nothing will ever unseat PJ as my one seed, but so much of that is due to intangibles and emotional attachment.

Objectively, does SG have a more quality catalogue? possssssibly so....

I can't jump into their heads, nor can I claim to have any direct knowledge about the situations you raise or how they arrived at the outcomes you mention. It's certainly not my place to defend their choices. I definitely understand where you're coming from and why this would bother certain segments of the fanbase, though.

I also can't say that I was enamored with the cross-promotion back then, although, I would say that many other bands on a similar level, at that time, were doing some form of retailer tie in with their album roll-outs. I'm not passing judgement, good or bad, I'm merely pointing out that it was a "thing" for a few years there.

As for the corporate gigs? I have no earthly idea...Maybe the corporation committed a certain obligation to the Vitalogy Foundation? New hair plugs? Solar panels for Mike's brain?
I'd have to properly research. Again, personally, not a shining moment, as a fan, but, I'd like someone who interviews them to ask so I can find out.

Still, I would say, by and large, these are occasional black eyes, in a macro sense, against a general backdrop of decades of consistency going in the other direction. YMMV as to the extent to which each affects your impression of the band.
