I put huge stock into hit totals, maybe I shouldnt, and I know it's a product of longevity, but being the all time hits leader means alot to me.

What do people think about where Mantle falls in these discussions? His numbers dont stack up to the others, but if you look at how much time he missed and how often he was hurt, they almost become more impressive than others.

Griffey seems to be falling into that same grey area...
Oddly enough everyone still puts DiMaggio high on the lists even though he doesnt have the career numbers, because of his short time in the bigs.

Honestly, I would probably put Mantle at 11, and there's no way he would be outside the top 15.

Here's an interesting comparison:

DiMaggio career WAR: 83.1
Rose career WAR: 80.2

DiMaggio is 267 plate appearances short of having half as many plate appearances as Rose.

my favorite DiMaggio stats... 7 seasons where he had more HR's than K's, including 1941, where in 139 games, and 622 plate appearances, he struck out, 13 times! 13!!!!! theres guys now days that do that every week of the season.

and its not like it was a slap hitting contact pesky mid infielder hitting .240 who struck out 13 times, it was a 30 HR, 125 RBI (that lead the league) .357 BA hitter who struck out 13 times. thats just insane.

and of course the hitting streak. thats one record that COULD be broken, that probably never will.

I love that hitting streak record. Even more so than the Ripken consecutive games played streak.

Its been 27 years since Molitors 39 game hitting streak and no ones touched that... and thats STILL 17 games short.
I remember Molitor talking about it once recently saying when he hit 30, it dawned on him, hes barely half way to 56... and 30 is one hell of a hitting streak.

no ones been to 56...

Molitor says the media attention back in 87 made it impossible, press conferences before/after every game after he got into the 30s. and that was in 87 LOL if someone gets to 39 today? theyd be living with cameras, what did he eat last night? did he put his shoes on the same way today? did he remember to tap the bat twice on the plate before the 2nd pitch?

Yeah, if you were to get that far, you'd almost have to refuse giving interviews/press conferences. Have the manager/teammates take the heat for you so "you can concentrate on the task at hand". I'd think that's the only way you could do it.

In today's game, I think, people wouldnt give the batter anything to hit if he started approaching the record.

Ironically, Ichiro is one of the few current players I could have scene making a run at it (a few years ago when he was still a hits machine) He at least was at one point used to the constant media attention when he first came over.

Ironically, Ichiro is one of the few current players I could have scene making a run at it (a few years ago when he was still a hits machine) He at least was at one point used to the constant media attention when he first came over.

I assume he didn't get hounded for interviews either, at least not to the same extent that other players would, since he kinda can't speak English.
