Pretty unfair to call William Duvall fake Layne. I think the AIC situation is more like AC/DC bringing in Brian Johnson after Bon Scott’s death than the STP guys finding someone who sounds like Weiland.

As for Sublime, Bradley Nowell was that band and it died with him. Like Nirvana and Kurt.

Shangri-LA DEE DA - the first time I heard this album, nearly 20 years ago, I was profoundly disappointed and didn’t revisit this album until today. My opinion has slightly shifted positively on this in that I think there’s some good stuff as you approach the second half of the album. Hello It’s Too Late and Bi-Polar Bear are the two best tracks to me on this listen, and there’s some interesting stuff going on in Regeneration, Transmissions From a Lonely Room, and A Song for Sleeping. Pretty much the rest to my ears just sounds like generic rock music. Back then I thought the album was extremely boring, and I have seen the light and found this album somewhat boring. I mean Days of the Week is catchy but that’s not a song that should stick with you on any good album - but it does here. I know a lot of you like this album but other than the 4 or 5 songs I mentioned above, it doesn’t do it for me.

Sad. This is just behind Purple and my second favorite STP album. It took me a decade to appreciate it, but once it clicked, it clicked hard. I love it.

Hello it's late is one of my favorite stp songs in general

Stone Temple Pilots (2010) - so if No. 4 and Shangri... have a lot of bland rock music combined with some legitimate highlights, this album more or less lacks those highlights while at the same time doesn’t have the lows of the prior two albums. That leaves this album as decent enough, but probably not worth revisiting. There’s a few good ideas, like on Hickory Dichotomy or Cinnamon or even Bagman, but there’s something in the execution on this album that just doesn’t quite get there. I did end up liking Fast As I Can and Between the Lines, though the second half of the latter song seemed to be ruined by a more than tongue in cheek reference to Nirvana’s Stay Away. Rather than something I got behind, it instead made me want to turn off the song and listen to Nirvana instead.

Hi-Rise (EP) - maybe there’s some bias in the fact that Chester Bennington had so little time with them, but these tracks lay out what seems like a reinvigorated band with a new spark. I think he brought his own identity to the table and it worked well for them. I would say all the tracks on the EP are good and it’s the best I have heard in quite a few albums.

I heard it for the first time today. Same with going through the second self-titled album.

Neither are as catastrophic as I expected and I think they had a potential future with Bennington. It’s not perfect but it sounds like a step in the right direction to me. The Gutt stuff is okay. They seem to be playing a bit looser. He sounds distractingly like Scott Weiland and it’s not the same but it’s not terrible either.

Stone Temple Pilots (2018) - I think a lot of times when a band gets a new lead singer sounds just like the one before it’s hard to know what to make of an album. I mean, the songs weren’t as bad as I expected, but it sort of seems like the logical extension of the last self titled. Middle of Nowhere, Six Eight, and Roll Me Under seem good enough...but I have now gone through 20 years of STP albums saying good enough, okay, decent. It makes me think I don’t really like this band all that much. I loved their first three albums and hope I shared that excitement, and I’ve tried to lend the same fair ear to these even though they lack the benefit of nostalgia to draw me in. Nothing offends me about the Weiland impersonator but nothing really draws me in either. Now on to the new album...

There are legitimately GREAT songs on that album. As I’ve said before, it’s my second favorite STP album. It didn’t really take me 10 years of listening to enjoy it, I just didn’t listen to it for many years, then when Scott died I went back to it and very quickly realized I loved most of the album.

I am about halfway through Perdida and man this is boring. It’s not that I need them to be loud or anything like that - in fact in this journey I have predominantly highlighted that their best stuff comes when they turn down the guitars - but this is a combination of nothing particularly interesting happening combined with them seemingly having nothing to say. Just a bunch of cliche songs about love. I hope I make it to the end.

Perdida - STP is oddly a band best known for their big arena rock blasts, and that is really their signature and what has made them who they are over nearly 30 years, yet perhaps one of their best and biggest moments came at MTV Unplugged when Weiland and Co. owned that format and delivered an epic performance. It makes something in the concept of Perdida a great idea - turning down the guitar and showcasing their musicality. The execution however, is nothing short of a bland disaster. This is just a bunch of songs about love or some other form of saying nothing with lots of words but no substance. I have recently had an affinity for more stripped down sounds with rock bands but stripped down doesn’t just mean putting out a quiet album. There needs to something to it. This ain’t it.

I immediately followed this by listening to Ultramega OK. I feel so much better.

The song Tomorrow is legit good. I think the Chester thing might have had potential. I wish they stuck with the Filter guy though. I like that album. I understand why they want to keep using the STP name but I file Talk Show, Army of Anyone, Chester and Gutt STP in my STP folder under solo projects DeLeo Bros. They are no more STP than the Weiland solo albums and it's easier to find things to enjoy with that mindset. I do the same thing with AIC. New stuff is Jerry solo albums. It works for me.

I have two playlists - STP Scott and STP Not. I'm going to have to do the same with AIC I guess.

I havent listened to Talk Show or Army Of Anyone not the new STP. Only a few singles, and i think i heard the previous album once? i dont know...I guess Scott was very instrumental on writing the melodies, the weird stuff of their albums and i think i miss that. Gutt seems way more strightforward.

I dont think its the same with AIC. Jerry wrote always most of the stuff, and this side of the band is way more heavy than the previous one..the three albums they made with William are very different beasts and fuck i love them.
