I'm not really sure when it's NOT the right time to talk about gun laws.

Damn.

I can't read any of the stuff about the victims. It makes me too sad/angry.

Slaughter in sin city!!

Over the worst photos.

Perhaps this is the straw that breaks the back?
I'm also at the dealership for an oil change and differential change. They have the Hallmark channel. I swear, most Hallmark movies could easily be the intros to pornos.

It always hurts so much more when you read about the individuals. Sounds like they were two wonderful women.

Tell them to put on Fox News because the time to discuss gun control is RIGHT NOW.
I'm discussing it right now with the waiting area. Everyone is very understanding and bringing up good, rational points.

I'm stymied how the country music fest in Vegas is somehow a more compelling argument than Newtown, but as long as the discussion is happening I guess that's what really matters.
Port Arthur was Australia's worst modern day mass shooting (35 people killed, 23 wounded), and that's what it took for the change to happen.

Vegas is the US's worst modern day mass shooting (59 killed, more than 500 wounded). If this isn't enough to make the change happen, then there is no hope for your country.

Not sure if already posted but great article about gun tracing. Man, you guys need to get the NRA out of politics.

Either way, it probably won't matter. Nth Korea is going to nuke us all anyway. Especially if Trump keeps baiting Kim.

Lots of things can be done I think outside of legislation. Businesses can install metal detectors and ban guns in hotels, offices etc. it's already done in a lot of places.

Unfortunately because of these turds were all going to have to put up with more and more intrusive security.

Legislation that is easy, waiting periods, comprehensive and extensive background checks, trigger locks, safety courses. That's easy.

Open carry and concealed carry in a lot of cases makes little sense in a city, more so in other environments.

There's plenty that can be done to make large events safer though they'll be even more expensive and less attractive.

I would just hope it's all stakeholders working together on it and they pass some common sense things most agree on that got punted after new town.

Is this the first mass shooting with, basically, an automatic weapon? If so, is it evidence that the laws that make it so difficult to obtain/modify such a weapon kinda worked?

I get the sense that gun ownership is culturally ingrained in US culture in a way that's completely different to Australia, I don't think the comparison really works - plus the number of firearms in circulation in Australia at the time of the 1996 buyback is a tiny fraction of those in the US, it really is just a drop in a bucket. Short of forceful confiscation (which surely would lead to some kind of civil war), there's no solution to the US gun culture which involves getting rid of guns.

Call me naive but registration and a central database for all firearms coupled with the banning of assault rifles can only lead to safer US. If you are carrying a weapon and you have the law on your side then you have no worries.

I seem to recall something... about how the NRA used to be very moderate and supported the restrictions that 80+% of the US currently wants, but they learned from the pro choice crowd that once you give an inch to your opponent they take a mile, so they went hard the other way. Anyway, here’s a good history of them:
