The GOP establishment lost in 2015 to a usurper who was more willing to say the openly racist or vindictive things they had winked at for years, in the name of rural votes. For a while they tried to to act like they didn’t like it, then that they didn’t notice. Now the hesitant have lost primaries to more obedient candidates or been defeated by Democrats, and the naked acceptance of racism is the actual party line.

They’re....

They’re having a vote on whether to condemn his tweets or not?

There is a huge fracture at the heart of the GOP that we’re seeing daily on the state level. About the only thing they can all agree on is that they need to project an image of party unification, and they’ll sort out the details later. The MT GOP just changed their slogan to “We’re better, together.”

This administration keeps lowering the bar. Meanwhile Trump's supporters either accept the racism or are still somehow blind to it.

Racism rarely knows that it’s racist. Homophobia almost never believes that it is homophobic. Sexism in particular is brutally blind.

The message sold to conservatives for the past few decades has run counter to the honest and humbling language of soul searching that is essential to overcoming these trends. Instead, the reassurance has been “you know better than anyone else if you’re a racist.”

It’s as simple as that. “You know better than anyone else if you’re a racist.”

If another person tells you a thing you said or did is racist, that person is a fucking idiot. If they say you ARE racist, they’re either so obsessed with race that THEY'RE the racist, or they’re dishonestly weaponizing the claim.

This is why it makes more sense to the conservative mindset to say that racism has been an overused and abused term during the last 20 years that it is to say that racism is still widely prevalent and that telling Americans of color to “go back” to the “countries they came from” is actually hurtful.

You know better than anyone whether or not you’re a racist.

The reporter she asked what his ethnicity was is Andrew Feinberg. A Jewish American.
She knows who he is though and theyve had previous fraught encounters it seems.

Has she really fucked up here or is this the new lower than ever tactic?

This is really selling me on conservatism.

Republicans were pointing to some rule that says you can’t call a president a racist on the House floor (added to the rule book the same month candidate Trump made his Mexican judge comments), and Emanuel Cleaver got fed up, abandoned the chair, slapped the gaveled down, and left.

Burt, I love you, but the idea that anybody has to sell you on conservatism is laughable

In spite of yourself, you did accurately describe the differences in mindset I think. Maybe not so much of modern liberals and conservatives, but of collectivists and individualists. The collectivist will always submit himself to an external authority to decide for him whether he is racist or not, where as an individualist, while hopefully being accepting of outside opinions, will save the final judgment for himself.

Exactly. Which is why the individualist is a feedback loop of internal biases.

If you honestly think people can be easily separated into those two camps you are an even less rigorous thinker that I imagined.

Anyway the best thing Steve Scalise ever did was to make sure he was on the baseball field that morning and it's a shame things turned out the way they did (him still being alive).

And the collectivist has no center or will of his own and is merely a spectator in his own life, subordinating himself to the whims of the collective, which is as biased and insane as he is. Or probably more so.
