The fact that you can live without listening to Ten again doesn't erase other fact: Ten is a legendary album, Gigaton is not.

And the most important thing to me: the songs. I can't see Never Destination being better than RVM, or Buckle up better than Leash, or River Cross better than Indifference, or Who Ever Said better than Go, or SWBM better than Daughter, and so on. We are talking about worlds apart.

I just can't comprehend it.

All due respect.
That's part of being human. We can't comprehend how other people think. Yeah, I probably would be a die-hard if the first record was Gigaton. It's authentic Pearl Jam to me, in the same way those Vs. songs are to you. Now as a little thought exercise, let's see how these play out in my brain:

RVM>ND
BU>Leash
Indifference>River Cross but it's closer than you'd think
WES>Go but again, very close
Daughter>SBWM

Different strokes for different folks. I absolutely adore the song "Come Back." Many PJ fans think it's one of their worst. I can't stand "Johnny Guitar" and many here think it's one of their best. Thank god that PJ has offered us such a diverse experience.

Vs. made me a diehard fan, but I prefer a few albums over it, though Gigaton is maybe half a step behind it for me. I agree with the concept that an album is sometimes more than a collection of songs. I mean, you could make a one on one argument against spots in Vitalogy but even still I would dig my heels into the idea that album as a concept isn’t among their best work.

Why? Isn't the only opinion that matters your own? Personally, I have Gigaton as their second best and Vs as their fourth, but my top 5 are practically interchangeable. Also, Ten, which in many ways scores highest with me, is an album that I hardly ever listen to and could probably go the rest of my life without hearing again. Being a fan is a dynamic equation.

Ten was a legendary album for me between the ages of 9 to about 15; idk, yes it's monumentally important to me because it started off my fandom, but my fandom matured; Ten isn't a flawless album for me anymore

Oooh I like that description and take on ten. I’ve struggled to rank it higher because of how little I’m interested in listening to it these days. But I cannot deny the impact that album had on me and how great it was as a complete work at the time.

I sometimes forget, but man No Code through Riot Act was such a solid run.
No Code through Riot Act was the best run for PJ. They sounded like a rock band authentically progressing and evolving into a mature, somewhat experimental, somewhat still rocking, band. They knew how to push the envelope, but never straying from what they do best. Taking risks, but never stepping out of line into ridiculousness or self-awarenessless.

It all started to go down hill with Avocado, with a few ups and a few downs in between, but it has never been the same since.

and the wanker's getting funneled.

On a serious note, the inclusion of Get It Back would have made Gigaton stronger.

Still surprised by how catchy this song is. I've been enjoying it more and more. I maintain that I do not like this type of song as much as I do the other styles PJ does, but this is as good as this particular type of song gets for me.

So I finally got out for a run with the new PJ Running Playlist and I'm happy to report that I was able to keep a pretty spritzy pace

If I compare the singles so far with the first two off Gigaton:

DotC>Dark Matter>Running>SBWM

Dance is great, but DM is being underrated imo. It's pretty damn good. I'm definitely enjoying Running more than I did SBWM at any stage. I feel Running and SBWM both are similar in that they are "fun" PJ, but Running doesn't overstay its welcome or take itself too seriously. It's also catchy as hell.

at this point, we can put DOTC up against anything in the catalouge. i don't expect a new song to hit me the way that one did, but i've really liked the first two singles. the riffs and solo have stuck out the most, i think that's what they are going for with this album.

Mine would be the exact opposite lol...I recognize that DOTC is a cool song but it's just not my type of music.

I agree with this for the most part and I kinda like that the dark matter and running threads eventually fell apart after over use.
