Ironically, Ichiro is one of the few current players I could have scene making a run at it (a few years ago when he was still a hits machine) He at least was at one point used to the constant media attention when he first came over.

I assume he didn't get hounded for interviews either, at least not to the same extent that other players would, since he kinda can't speak English.

The Japanese media would still be up his ass.

I don't know enough about tanaka to judge this signing, I hope it doesn't work out but I really have no idea.

Yeah, it's def a bad contract for a team like the Jays, and even the Red Sox, who are trying to spend less and develop more homegrown talent.

There's a ton of risk. If he doesn't turn out to be the pitcher they're hoping he becomes, he's signed for seven years at $22 million (plus the $20 posting fee) with a full no-trade clause. If he does turn out to be the pitcher they're hoping he becomes, he can leave (or, more likely, get an even bigger contract) after four years.

Andy Pettitte was worth 3.2 fWAR last year. Yu Darvish was worth 5.0. If Tanaka puts up Darvish-like numbers, the Yankees add somewhere around two wins in 2014. I think it's much more likely he puts up similar numbers to Pettitte (very good, but not elite) and that this signing ends up as a neutral move as far as their 2014 rotation goes.

There's risk, but the Yankees, unlike any other team, can absorb this being an absolute bomb.

If he follows what other Japanese pitchers have done in MLB, he'll probably be very good-to-elite this year, and then slowly morph into an average MLB starter.

The Yanks spent as much as they wanted to in '09 and that worked out really well, so there goes you're argument.

I think every team can afford to take risks, and if that means assigning a big contract to a player like Tanaka then so be it. The Yanks can afford this risk.
